These over-the-top guards’ uniforms from “Elaan of Troyius” are my nominee for Worst TOS Costume Design. The outfits looked like they were made from plastic placemats — because they were! For some reason, suddenly I’m hungry for lobster.
Unfortunately, as much as I loved his character, and Daro's, Gul Macet pulled a serious all-around fashion no-no in the Cardassians' first appearance. (The beard, however, was cool.) And don't forget Garak's first outfit. What an eyesore.
TNG Romulans. Embarrassing bowl cuts and shoulder pads. IMPOSSIBLE to take seriously. Thank you for fixing them, JJ Abrams!
And the patterns on their uniforms appeared to be random. They had absolutely no relation to rank or position. Only thing I can think of is it was family/clan affiliation...I wonder if a novel ever mentioned this.
The problem with TNG was the 80's. There were some clothing ideas during the decade overall that were really out there that just look silly now, future-clothing or not. In the 80's, people had a weird fashion sense for what they thought looked good.
OMG. TNG Romulans was my first thought!! hahaha! The outfits were so distracting that I still can't watch the episodes and take them seriously. Overall I think VOY was the best with the outfits. Nelix was pretty bad but his makeup balanced out those hideous suits.
I loved the outrageous Ferengi outfits and Neelix's outfits. They fitted the characters and were believable and interesting.
We like to remember the most outrageous, attention-getting, or extreme styles of any particular period, but there’s always good and bad fashion. Remember Sturgeon’s Law.
I remember when I was little and saw the episode arena for the first time. The gorns outfit was so ridiculous I couldn't keep myself from laughing.
When I first saw that episode, I was able to accept the rubber lizard suit. The silly part was that tunic the Gorn was wearing. It looked like something Bob Mackie designed for Cher.
