Trauma and Masculinity in Star Trek: Picard

Cake Is Eternal

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
This is Part Two of a series of four articles on trauma and masculinity in Star Trek. The first focused on Kirk; the second on Picard. These articles are adapted from my research paper which earned an A- from a very demanding professor. My editor at Treksphere helped me adapt my paper for articles so I could share with everyone.

TW, I discuss trauma with reliable psychological sources.

Perceptive essay. I hadn’t seen the first one on Kirk / TOS, but you make a good point about how TNG showed consequences from previous episodes. Another thing you might have included about Picard’s trauma--In “Tapestry” he recalls when the Nausicaan stabbed him through the heart; he spent the rest of his life with an artificial heart.

Thank you for reading! Here is the Kirk article.

I wasn’t able to cover even half the material I wanted to in this paper. It was meant to be a ten page term paper and I wrote twenty pages. So I wasn’t able to get everything in. I’d do my master’s thesis on this topic, for sure.

Your article on Kirk makes an interesting point about “Wink of an eye” – hadn’t thought of it that way. About Kirk’s line in TFF, “I need my pain” --you assume that Shatner’s script refers to PTSD from battles in outer space. It’s never clarified though….what if it refers to something in his childhood? Shatner’s memoir describes the hurtful prejudice against his family in Montreal.

You've done alot of essays on Treksphere...will check out more of them. Thanks for sharing!

Wouldn't the more safe assumption be his experience on the colony with Governor Kodos?

I tried to keep it quite open, the cause of Kirk’s PTSD, because there are so many fan theories, and I wanted to leave my work open to interpretation by the fans. I myself guess Tarsus IV or David’s death.
