Transparent Dome under Constitution Class Saucer, what is it

Re: Transparent Dome under Constitution Class Saucer, what is

It's the semi-transparent underside of the ship's jacuzzi. The reason we never see it upclose is that we don't want to see peoples' bottoms squashed into the curvature of the tub as they relax in it.

I so did not need the mental image of James Doohan and William Shatner in a hottub...from underneath.

Re: Transparent Dome under Constitution Class Saucer, what is

Seriously, though, wasn't it really the original design intention, when the Enterprise was smaller and the saucer was meant to make planetfall, that the ventral transparent dome really was a lift engine, and the upper one a window into the bridge... or am I just imagining that?

What is the Transparent Dome at the bottom of the Enterprise's Saucer hull for ?

Milk dispensing.

The "shipple" ?

How else are growing shuttle craft supposed to grow up to become nice large starships?

Ergo, the ones on the warp nacelle domes are the "whipples"

Now that you mention it, the front-ends of TOS and ENT Enterprise warp nacelles do look like a pair of boobs. Kinda like the Alana Soares look.

What is it? It was described as a "planetary sensor array" by Franz Joseph. Prior to that, I don't know that it was ever described. I do know that I believed, 'til I saw the "official" F.J. explanation mentioned above, that it was the emitter for the weapons systems. Most people who aren't Trek fans still believe that to be the case, based upon watching the show rather than reading the tech manuals.

I'd be interested to know what Matt Jeffries thought about this. Of course, he's not really available to ask right now... :\

Given all the existing evidence and documentation, plus the fact that it's been accepted by fandom (and based upon the fact that, however blurry, the FJ diagrams HAVE been seen on-screen!), I tend to accept the F.J. explanation.

The dome is an enclosure for some mysterious sensor equipment we simply can't see. Just like the dome above the bridge isn't a window, but is a sensor array ("The Cage" notwithstanding).

You know what, TNG's "The Mind's Eye" seems to very vaguely endorse your point of view. When LaForge, under Ambassador's Kell's influence, beamed weapons down to the planet surface, he cross-circuited using the planetary sensor array. There is the suggestion that the Enterprise-D's transporter mechanism and planetary sensor array are, at least, loosely related if not connected.

Yeah, that too. But didn't mention it because we are talking about the TOS ship. But the point is still valid.

It is used to used to destroy planets by focusing the energy into a very tight narrow beam. Also as a vertical take off impulse engine cover for the saucer when it has landed on a planet.

Well, shit. I'm definitely convinced!

I was serious.Hold your hand out on a sunny day and you feel warmth. Now put a 3 inch magnifying glass over it and your hand will burn.
To destroy a planet instead of using a 50 metre wide beam you funnel a 100 megawatt into a 20 cm circle in 1 second and hey presto! the accumalation of so much energy so quickly in such a small space will blast a hole in the planets crust with resultant super heated mantle magma expanding suddenly and destroying the crust of the planet in an explosive outward force.Like a balloon pricked with a needle.

This is how we destroy planets,by generating energy in small confined spaces with a magnification effect. In other words it is actually a electronic lens which focuses phaser bursts to an extremely fine point of 20 cm as this is the diffraction limitation for an orbital beam with that particular lens diameter.
When the saucer lands the lens is jettisoned and the emergency impulse engines are used for vtol.

Re: Transparent Dome under Constitution Class Saucer, what is

It's a disco ball, for use on any planet that lacks da'funk.

Re: Transparent Dome under Constitution Class Saucer, what is

It is a hemispherical sensor suite, with an extendable targeting sensor on the "nipple".

Within reason. I've popped a cork a few times and uttered a few choice terms... as long as it's not FLAMING someone, it's fair game.

Usually, I'll write something like this, though... "Why the @#$* not?" ;)

Oh well. To each their own. Welcome to the board... 16 posts so far. I can remember that far back (it WAS only about two years ago, after all... I post a LOT!)

You're imagining it. Unless you take the Dinky Toys version of the Enterprise as being "canon," there was NEVER any hint or intention of any aspect of the 1701 being able to land from the original designers.

That was the whole point of first coming up with transporters, then eventually shuttlecraft. You couldn't afford to show the ship landing, so they skipped that and said that it couldn't land at all. Which, frankly, makes perfect sense (as opposed to the "Voyager landing legs" which are... well, just unbearably SILLY).
