Transition and explanation of SNW into TOS technology

I'll rephrase to make my point clearer.

As it was also noted, Picard S3 noted that the Fleet Museum has only TOS/TMP starship designs (not the Disco/SNW ones).
This is a very clear indication of a distinction.
But they had the DSC Enterprise in PIC S1, plus the DSC shuttle and even some 23rd century ships from the Binary Stars battle. So is that in a different timeline too?

The Museum only showing us certain ships doesn't mean anything, because absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. PIC suggests that the TOS and SNW Constitution designs co-exist.

I agree with others that there's a non-negligible change that SNW ends with Pike handing over to Kirk and the Enterprise being 'refitted' to resemble the 1960s design. I wouldn't be bothered either way if they do or don't, depending on how they handle it.

But it would amuse me if they made some other minor changes, and canonised that the TOS Enterprise was always 442m. ;)
 
It doesn’t matter what they showed previously. They don’t have to show that there was an idea that both designs coexisted because they showed a hologram of the Discoprise in S1 and then a TOS Connie in S3, just like they’re never going to show that TOS Klingons existed alongside the DSC orcs and the current TNG-esque Klingons.
 
I feel like that would inevitably come across more like a mockery than a celebration. It draws attention to the artifice and limitations of both shows instead of honouring the Original Series by maintaining the imaginary reality it worked hard to establish.
 
I would love for a single "swing at the fences" episode filmed using sets, costumes, SFX and the aspect ratio from the 1960s. All without explanation. :lol:
This is my "Holy Grail" episode. I want it to happen so much, as long as it's 100% without explanation and played straight. It would be an awesome thing to do for the 60th, and have the added benefit of further cementing in fact that SNW is prime, with a different visual aesthetic.

Has to run about 50 minutes too.
 
The thing I would want the most that I know they won't do is film the Enterprise as a model. Do all the exterior shots the old fashioned way.
That would be great. Or if they could use CGI to duplicate the look and feel of a physical model. Which would probably be super expensive.

Agreed 100%. Motion control is a lost art, and to me still looks far better and more believable than CGI.

The absolute best thing they could ever do, that they absolutely won't, is film the original model that's currently in the Smithsonian.

Yeah, that ain’t happening. The best they could do with that would be to scan it into a CGI model, but then that would defeat the purpose.
 
Aside from the TOS Constitution (USS New Jersey) we also see the TMP/TUC era USS Enterprise-A in the Starfleet Museum. So all three Constitution-class starships up to that point (TOS Mark I, TMP Mark II, and PIC Mark III in the USS Titan-A)

I will say Doug Drexler did a pretty good job of that with the early episodes of Star Trek Continues before he left the series. Might not be as expensive as one thinks to ape the look of practical models in CGI.
 
CGI is best for WWII movies now.

“Pearl Harbor” was worse than 1970’s models—but today’s art looks better.

The water just doesn’t scale right in the models of old war films.

If only for the blasphemy of it—I want the latest tech to do a Studio Ghibli version of Carpenter’s THE THING.

They’d both be mad as hell, but it’d be worth it—just to see Garry’s eyebrows.

Next up—South Park does Julius Caesar.

What was the right thing? More mentions of the time barrier being broken in Star Trek: Discovery, with a few Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Why the time barrier being broken is important? Because of Navigator Jose Taylor's comments. The breaking of the time barrier, gives us the perfect excuse for the speed of Discovery. Furthermore, since ships were so much slower than those capable of breaking the time barrier, horror stories about what had been happening out there could predominate...

I think you've got to forgive a bit of early instalment weirdness from a series or else you'll never fully enjoy anything.

Plus the "time barrier" is never explained, we have no idea what it means, only that the new ships are faster. All the new ships, the Enterprise especially, not just Discovery. So this has no bearing on anything that happens in the series.
 
How shocking that artistic people felt the need to actually be artistic, rather than just completely copy designs from over half a century ago.
Creative people being creative? I am shocked by this, absolutely shocked!

Oh, wait, no I'm not. Roddenberry decided he wanted to reinvent everything from the ground up in TMP. I don't see any long soliloquies on how wrong he was or explaining the tech and uniform differences. Same with TWOK.

I enjoy the OP's write up because that's what makes a lot of fan interactions interesting but I'll hardly call the SNW crew "wrong" for making art I don't like. Creative people love to be creative.
