Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

While The Last Knight is tied with Revenge of the Fallen for worst Transformers movie. I was hoping to see a conclusion to all the build up they did with Unicron and Quintessa.

Rise of the Beasts looks like a ride and I'm here for it!

Recall back in 2015, that Paramount had a big summit/conference to chart out a new direction for the Transformers movies. Since, while every film had been profitable, they weren't winning over critics. What they came up with, shocking to say, was:

Transformers The Last Night 2017 - The lowest grossing mainline TF movie.
Bumblebee 2018 - A smaller hit at the BO but a win with critics.

Paramount had been cagey about what to classify Bumblebee as. The film is an 80s nostalgia romp, with a lot of call backs to G1 TF. It could've easily worked as a prequel to TF1. However, with TLK losing money at the BO. Paramount likely decided to chart forward with the critically popular spin-off series. Bay is no longer directing. Not that he wanted to stay past TF3, but was talked back into directing two times, too many.

The new TF films seem to be taking cues from the later X-Men films. With decade hoping, no returning human cast and blending elements from the previous continuity.

I suspect the new TF team is just doing what they want to see adapted to screen; that hasn’t been already. While keeping it familiar for the general audiences.

They have done:
1. The AllSpark on Earth - Generator of TF life in the universe.

2. War for energon on Earth with Megatronus Prime (The Fallen).

3. War against Transformers and Humans. With the betrayal of Sentinel Prime.

4. Transformers being hunted and harvested for materials. Featuring the Dino Bots.

5. Transformers meets King Arthur/Merlin, meets humans still hunting Transformers from the last movie, meets Quintessa, meets Nemesis Prime (total waste btw), meets Earth is Unicron (plot from the 2010 series Transformers Prime).

6. Soft Reboot with a recognizable protagonist, who isn't Optimus Prime. Set in the glow of 80s nostalgia.

Beast Wars is the untouched frontier that can actually inspire genuine intrigue in the brand. Coasting on 90s nostalgia. We do animals, instead of cars!

I didn't realize how much I missed Beast Wars until that Netflix three-parter.

OK, so this is definitely a reboot unless they do some kind of time jump to after the Last Knight or whatever it was called.

Finally, they did Unicron! Now I'm looking forward to this.

I am a little confused by how this fits with the Michael Bay movies. I haven't seen any of his movies beyond the first one, but recently I was looking up Unicron after he came up in another discussion, and I thought it said on either Wikipedia or the Transformers wiki that Earth was Unicron in either the 3rd or 4th Bay movie.

That's right. At the end of the 5th movie they said that Unicron was in the Earth. It was a set up for movie 6 which never happened. No idea how they would have played that out but since this new movie takes place in the 90s it seems like those movies are going to be completely ignored. I guess you can start with Bumblebee and forget the rest.

I fell asleep during the third one and didn't bother with the others until Bumblebee. I am informed that I missed nothing of interest. Even so, from what little I recall of the first two and a half I did watch; continuity obviously wasn't much of a concern for the filmmakers, so calling anything a reboot in all of that mess is rather arbitrary either way.

Unexpectedly liked Bumblebee after hating the previous movies to various extents, but can't say I'm enthused by the Maximals / Predacons thing.

I never liked the non vehicle transformers...

I really love the Optimus Prime transformation at the end of this
He transforms almost just like the Toy, none of the over the top Bayformers moving part shit

That looks great. The way they transformed in the Bay movies was an absolute mess.

RotB seems to be hitting the nostalgia/memberberries pretty good in its transformations and I love it but I also love the Bayformers transformations too, in fact I prefer that.
But man, this movie is tracking so, so bad right now.
