Because it is entertaining. It is pure and simple. People want to see giant robots fighting each other and shit got blown up. Stories and characters are reserved for other kinds of movies.
TF2 has all of those in spades.
I think TF2 is actually better than the first one. There is no pretense of a story or characters, and there is more action.
Ho Hum...it just seems like there are entirely TOO MANY movies where there is no real story and shit is just getting blown up...you can't even tell who's blowing who up!!! At what point will the public at large be saturated with this subpar "entertainment" and say enough already?!
Then to compound the problem these brainless movies actually make money & are gobbled up by the public -- which just reinforces Crapwoods attraction to them. All I can say and do is that they haven't gotten a dime of my fuckin money!

Obviously we are no where close to the saturation point yet. Just look at TF2 WW box office. And quite obvious that your dime makes no difference. TF2 is doing almost as well as the dark knight in the first 5 days, which is quite an monumental achievement in financial magic.
I would guarantee that TF3 will be coming to a theatre near you and the suits (and Bay) would want to change NOTHING but up the explosion a notch.
BTW, why are brainless movies a problem? They entertain the masses. They contribute to the economy. It is a win-win for everyone. And people like you don't have to go see it. No one forces you to.
Well I won't claim brainless movies are a "problem"...but it's just a sad state of affairs that so many people are actually "entertained" by them....even when it is an obviously bad bad movie such as this.

Transformer 2 is a stupid, chaotic, very bad movie. If Kurzman and Orci writing for Star Trek 2 a "screenplay for kids" like this...! My God, poor Star Trek!
Once again, just for the sake of accuracy, Orci and Kurtzman were NOT the only writers on Transformers 2.
Ehren Kruger, writer of such gems as SCREAM 3, REINDEER GAMES, and THE BROTHERS' GRIMM also had a hand in Transformers 2 on the page. When you throw Michael Bay into the mix, it's definitely not fair to pin so much on Orci and Kurtzman.
STAR TREK, by itself, as words, isn't perfect but it's miles more coherent and engaging than Transformers 2. It's a much better measuring stick for them.

That doesn't mean much. John Rogers is credited with the first Transformers film and his other credits include CATWOMAN and THE CORE. The first Transformers was much better than the sequel in terms of writing/story.
Agreed on Transformers 1. But on his own blog, Rogers has said his stuff didn't get very far. The soldiers were much more prominent in his early versions. It's a great blog overall.
And while The Core seems ridiculous, the guy does have a degree in Physics and we DID find giant crystals in caves in Mexico.
As for Catwoman... there is no excuse.
I see what you're saying, but I think a lot of what people hated in Trans2 was far more Michael Bay's doing, especially the Twins. I can't prove it, but it seems more in line with his work that pre-dates Orci and Kurtzman. I mean, they were basically white ghetto versions of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's BAD BOYS characters.
Orci and Kurtzman aren't gods by any stretch, don't think I'm all like ORCI AND KURTZMAN 4 LYFE or anything, but I did want to make sure the hate was being distributed in at least 3rds, if not 4ths.

I know that two robots weren't Orci/Kurtzman's fault, and they were one of my biggest issues with the movie.
But there's a lot of other stuff that bugs me (i.e. the Matrix of Leadership?!?! - the stupidest concept ever and completely unneeded considering how they could have done the same thing without it).
Man, that is disappointing. I wonder if the Twins were as sterotypical and offensive at that stage? One thing to look forward to, though: Lindelof will also be writing with them. I think part of what made Trek XI work was that there was a system of checks and balances. If the same people are in place I'm not too worried.
The way I understood that was that Orci, Kurtzman & Ehren had not included the Twins at all in their 20 page story.
They were totally Bay's creation when he went from 20 pages to 60.
Um.... Don't people still go see fireworks displays, Pro wrestling events, Nascar Races, Circuses, and Monster Truck rallies.
yeah I've always seen Entertainment as a way to let your brain RELAX and DESTRESS from having to think all day, but I guess people want to have a mental breakdown so let's just keep that brain a moving 24/7. Brainless entertainment is actually HEALTHY as it allows time for your brain to relax. Remember even while you sleep your brain is working hence why you dream. So a two hour break isn't that bad. Come on Ebenezer give poor Cratchet a holiday.

I think it's a combination of their accents, them being illiterate, having gold teeth (which posers don't tend to emulate), and at least one of them looking like a chimp. I don't know if it's racist, but it is blatant stereotyping personified in the robots.
Also, I think the fact that Orci and Kurtzman themselves aren't happy with how those characters were portrayed is telling.
