Oh she does, but it's nice that there is at least some allowance for a black woman to have a more natural haircut on Trek. There's not a particularly great history of that in Trek or TV more generally.
(I just googled 'black women on Star Trek' because I could only think of about 4. Turns out, there's about 4. Mae Jamieson's 20 second bit part makes most lists).

The out of context-ness of the video has me a little confused on where Mudd comes in.

I know this is shallow, but I still can't stand the design of the Discovery and I'm still not sold on the Klingons, but I liked the trailer. Still not clear when this takes place though.

It takes place roughly a decade before the original Star Trek TV series.

Some folks looking at the trailer have made fairly persuasive arguments that what's shown points to a separation in time between Burnham's service on Shenzhou and Discovery.

I don't feel that's shallow at all, we don't have much more to go on than visuals at this point

This just didn't have any Star Trek feel to me--at least not from the trailers.

I would have watched the show no matter what if it were on a network, but even if the show is good, I'm not paying a streaming service for it. The trailers have not changed my mind.

I wish I could get more excited about it.

I hope the pilot episode is the only one with the lights turned off and then they turn them on in the second episode. BTW, this looks a lot like ST:Horizon actually, which was great for a fan production, but the lack of light was intentionally concealing the obvious lack of real sets there.

The pictures they've released of the Discovery's bridge, it appears to be brighter then the Shenzhou.

Johnny isn't his brother. He was "George Kirk Jr." in the original version of the scene, but they cut the scene that explained who he was.

So they dubbed over the drive by yelling, and he became Johnny, some kid Kirk knew and not his brother.

I never understood why they did that. In the film there's no indication of who he is. The viewer assumes it's a school friend or possibly a family member, but it doesn't really matter.

If you have kid Jim shout "Sam" it's a nice little moment for fans, and makes no difference to anyone else. Why change it?

Maybe it was changed on the off chance they wanted to do something different with the Sam character later on? Already have him off world during a flashback or something?

Could be. From the films there's no indication Kirk even has a brother. He appears to be an only child. But then you don't see Sybok in Spock's flashbacks. Or Burnham...

It's entertaining how some of the online outlets are chattering about the "cold war with the Klingons" supposedly hinted at in the Discovery trailer - as far as I can tell they don't know what the phrase means and are just parroting a reference from Star Trek 6 because some writers know that Meyer is involved.

What we're being shown and what the characters briefly mention in the trailer is not a "cold war." It looks like a full-on shooting war.

But is it a war between Federation and Klingons or is it a Klingon civil war that a couple of Starfleet ships get themselves caught up in?

Well, if his way to "end the war" is a violent one, I'm just glad the hero ship isn't called USS Enola Gay.
