Earth, the home of human civilization was on the eve of destruction. Humanity has all but depleted the natural resources of their planet. The nations of the world are locked in a state of cold war. However the talks are starting to break down as natural resources become more and more scarce.
The five strongest nations are the United States, United Kingdom, Ottoman Empire, People's Republic of China, and Jonathanland. The United States and United Kingdom created an army of machines that are controlled by artificial intelligence (AI). The People's Republic of China created similar machines, these machines were controlled by humans who put their consciousness into the bodies of machines, instead of controlled by AI. The Ottoman Empire had AI controlled machines similar to the United States and United Kingdom, however the Ottoman Empire allowed machines to act freely and obtain citizenship. Jonathanland did not create machines at all however.
While world leaders argued away, the machines rebelled. All of the humans, except for Jonathanland, banded together to stop the machines, however after a long war the machines won. Prime Minister Jonathan McDonald of Jonathanland signed a peace treaty with the machines immediately after the start of the war and they were spared. What few humans were left in the rest of the world had formed a resistance movement.
The machines founded their own government called the Arm. The Arm was a democracy that consisted of the American, Communist Chinese, and Ottoman machines. The British machines decided to start their own faction however, this faction was called the Branch. The Branch had left the Earth in search of a new home.
Eventually the American and Communist Chinese machines of the Arm left the Earth 2000 years after the Branch had left, also in search of a new home. The Ottoman machines decided to stay behind on Earth, however they remained part of the Arm. The Ottomans helped the humans rebuild their civilization and kept diplomatic negotiations between Jonathanland and the Arm active. The Earth was beginning to prosper again, it's natural resources have been renewed over the past 2000 years.
In the year 5023 AD the Ottomans lost contact with the rest of the Arm. The Ottomans looked into the matter more deeply and discovered that the problem wasn't at their end. Unknown to the Ottomans, a new war has begun, and this one will last longer than anyone could possibly imagine.
The Arm had just entered a civil war. The human conscious Communist Chinese machines had broke away and attacked the Arm. These Communist Chinese machines called themselves the Core. The Americans remained part of the Arm.
The Core's initial attack destroyed all long range communications for the Arm, therefore severing the Arm's communications with Earth. The war lasted for the new few millennia and continues to this day. Most of the Arm and the Core now think that humans and Earth are legends and fairy tales.
