TOS-R marathon on Space...

And at number 3 is the afore mentioned Space Seed

So leaving the top two as one of Mirror, Mirror/Where No Man.../Journey to Babel (delete as appropriate) and City at the End of Forever?

[edit] Bah - just too slow :)

I would love to see the war games in "The Ultimate Computer", but I'm not sure many would have voted for it. I was disappointed that "A Piece of the Action" was part of it, although I'm glad the two Romulan classics were shown.

Huh, "Mirror, Mirror" is #1. I wouldn't have expected that -- in the Top 10, sure, but #1? Well, I guess life is full of surprises.

The full list...

1. Mirror, Mirror
2. City on the Edge of Forever
3. Space Seed
4. The Trouble With Tribbles
5. The Doomsday Machine
6. Amok Time
7. Balance of Terror
8. The Enterprise Incident
9. A Piece Of The Action
10. The Tholian Web

Not a bad list...I did not vote for #3, 6, or 9.

I also expected City to be #1.

I am glad that The Ultimate Computer did not place; I like the episode, but the remastered effects were pretty subpar for TOS-R. They could have included lots of battle damage on the various ships...and instead, we just mainly see fleeting glimpses of the ships during the battle...

It has been a great Trek Weekend here in Canada! Since Saturday, Space has played all 10 movies (some of them TWICE), plus the 10 marathon episodes! Next up is The Cage (R) followed by the 10 marathon episodes again, ending tomorrow morning! :) :)

Plus...TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and now TOS-R air every weekday on Space as well!

When you think about it, Mirror Mirror is just top notch. The acting, the concept, the suspense, the action...it all comes together. And then there's Uhura, the sexiest she's ever been. And then there's Spock, arguably the coolest he's ever been.

Sorry to hear that about The Ultimate Computer. That would have been one of the best shows to demonstrate the real beauty of the remastered shots.

I was a bit disappointed that City and Piece of the Action made the list. Not really good FX shows. However, it's great they'll eventually show them all on Space.

I agree that it's a good list. The only episode on it that I don't like is "Amok Time", but it was inevitable that this one would be on there. As much as I hate to admit, the episode is considered a classic, the battle sequence (and its music) is iconic, and it's historically important for what it established about Vulcan culture. I think "Journey to Babel" would have been a better entry on the list, though. "Mirror, Mirror" is a good number one. It's not as powerful emotionally as "The City on the Edge of Forever", but I think it has everything that makes "Star Trek" great at its best - fun, original, exciting, intelligent, and even touching at times (i.e. the stuff with Marlena).

I loved seeing the episodes, however I could have done without the three Space personalities introducing the episodes. The black woman has been there forever and will forever annoy the living daylights out of me.

Well, after watching them all I observed a few things.

Firstly, the remastered live-action footage along with the gorgeous colour and rich sound are wonderful to experience. We also see that TOS had a lot more texture and detail than I think many people give it credit for.

The new space and ship f/x were a mixed bag. Generally they were competently done and some of them were quite nice in of themselves, but mostly I felt something was off. Many of them seemed kind of flat rather than the image of an actual three dimensional object.

In particular I thought some shots, particularly those of the Tholian ships, the Romulan D7s and the remade doomsday machine, looked too contemporary in aesthetic and rather cartoony, too obviously cgi. In the planet killer's case I still prefer the original design much better--its asymetrical shape looked more alien and its colouring was more subtle.

Who the hell voted for "A Piece Of The Action"? Not me. "Mirror, Mirror" at No. 1 was a bit of a surprise, but certainly not a disappointment. And, yes, I too would like to have seen "The Ultimate Computer." When I voted I didn't necessarily go with my absolute favourites but for those episodes with a good amount of redone f/x to see what had been done. I also really wanted to see "Where No Man Has Gone Before," but it will be in syndication very soon.

I was impressed again with "The Cage" and that Space aired the whole thing uncut and ran it with ads out to an hour and a half to make sure they got everything in there. Good for them, but then again Space has always treated TOS respectfully ever since the station first began broadcasting over a decade ago. I did appreciate some of the new f/x for "The Cage" because here they really were needed, especially since so little of the ship was seen in the original version. I wonder, though, whether they should have done something about that transparent effect sequence when the ship goes to warp--it's obviously rotoscoped and seems totally out of place.

The new f/x in TOS-R's version of "The Trouble With Tribbles" were much better than DS9's "Trials And Tribble-ations." I'm still bugged by the notion of why does the ship have to orbit the station. It doesn't make sense since the station is far too small to have any real gravity effect on the ship. It might make more sense just to have the station itself rotating, not for gravity of course but to offer a changing view out the windows perhaps.

Another thing I note after not seeing some of these episodes for awhile: the performances. There is a lot of subtle and non-verbal acting going on from everyone that is a joy to experience as it really adds nuance and insight into what characters may be thinking without uttering a word. I still think the acting in TOS generally far outstrips what we got in later series. Shatner in particularly is much better than he's often given credit for and not once did he speak in that caricatured style so exaggerated by everyone particularly standup comics. It was wonderful to see.

The only time I recall Shatner speaking in that caricatured way is in "The Lights Of Zetar" and the rest of that episode ain't any great stuff either.

I noticed something odd while watching these episodes.

I watched them on my Samsung 32" LCD which is not 1080p resolution. And I don't have digital cable yet still get very good reception quality on my regular cable. I definitely noticed the improved colour and image detail on the live-action scenes although it wasn't a huge difference over my original DVD sets. But the remastered f/x sequences looked better than what I'd seen online possibly because it wasn't in HD on my screen. I also did some screen caps and the shots look better than when I'd seen actual HD screencaps from online.

Weird.
