Yes, as I only have season 1 on DVD now, so it wouldn't be double payment for me.

Yes, I'll probably buy the Remastered episodes on DVD. I might wait until they come down in price somewhat, but it's fair to say I'll pick them up at some point.

No. I already have the DVDs. I see no need to rebuy them just to get to see better special effects.

You may feel differently when HD TV is the norm in about a decade's time.
Not me. Having the episodes digitally remastered already shows some of the little things we were never meant to see because of the era in which the show was made. I don't need to see anymore.

I wish we could get the old soundtracks restored, removing the interspliced Season 2 music cues from Season 1 and so forth.

I have stayed away from collecting the Star Trek series on DVD, because I would want all of them, and I can't justify - or afford - the nearly $2800 it would cost to get all of them. (That's jsut a rough estimate at about $100 per season.) However, I think I can manage the 3 seasons of the TOS-R, and convince myself to be OK with stopping there.

Yes. So far the only TOS recordings I have are VHS taped for me by a friend (commercials and all), so I would like a proper set anyways. I can't get the remastered on TV, but I like the clips I've seen and I can't see it reducing my enjoyment of the episodes.

If they release them in high definition on HD-DVD, with the standard definition versions burnt onto the other side of the discs compatible with DVD players (I'm pretty sure that's possible), in a complete three season box set, with original versions of every episode as an option, all arranged in production order (not air date order), and all for around £100, then I'll happily buy them.

If they do less than that, I'll begrudgingly buy them. ;)

I've already got TOS on DVD, and I don't care enough about any changes they've made to the episodes to spend more money on them. The originals are fine for me.

Maybe, but I will soon have the DVD 3 seasons and no HDTV. I see this as a no rush situation, especially until the HD vs Blue Ray formats resolve themselves.

NEVER.

Why -on Earth- would I want to buy a reimagining of someone else's when the perfect thing exists?

Same thing about SW; Where could I find the original? -No really; I'd love to have the original trilogy on DVD, but does it exist? NO! -Only the bastardised version is in sale!

I felt much the same way about the Special Edition Star Wars. I thought they went way too far in making changes (even making Greedo shoot first), so I didn't want to buy the new versions on DVD.

However, I finally bought them a few weeks ago. Lucas is selling the original versions in two-disk sets along with the special editions. Got 'em on Amazon!

It isn't just the new special FX. The beautiful new transfers alone are worth it, at least to me. The new FX are just icing on the cake. Count me in, unless the prices are too high (in which case, I'll just wait).

After about ten years of being spoiled by HD TV, you'll probably find less and less reason to watch your originals in regular format.

I never thought I'd stop playing my LP soundtracks, either. The scratchy sounds of the needle didn't bother me, the sound didn't seem all that bad - but as I bought more and more new recordings in the (only) CD format, I got lazy. I found I was tired of getting up halfway through an LP favourite, just to turn it over and play Side 2. And, now, the needle noises and the crackling static electricity of LPs drive me crazy!

I've ended up buying CD versions of most of what I really love, and can't live without, because I also never gotten around to recording the LPs onto blank CDs, as I'd once assumed I'd be doing.

IMO, the originals in DVD format will be unwatchable by the majority when they get spoiled by HD.
If CBS/Paramount releases the HD/original F/Xs, there is a chance they will remain in the public consciousness.

I'd hesitate to say "perfect," however...

Now that I've actually seen a couple of whole episodes of these remastered efforts beyond the clips and screencaps I've seen online...

I am really unimpressed. Technically the new shots have a measure of polish and in some cases perhaps smoother movement than the old 11 footer E, but that said they've lost something in the translation. Even their new cgi model--being much better than their first effort--looks unconvincing and without substance. It's technically nice, but it really lacks any sense of size and majesty the old f/x managed with the 11 footer.

But what really disappoints me is how obvious it all is. Very little if any of it looks anything like they could have been done originally under the best of conditions back in the day. It all stands out so obviously against the remaining live-action footage rather than fitting in seamlessly as the new f/x did in the TMP-DE and Lucas' revamped original SW trilogy. To me this is a real slap-in-the-face to the original creators. Rather than building upon and enhancing what was already there they've just replaced it with slicker (and inappropriate) contemporary flash and zero substance.

In "Balance Of Terror" I absolutely loathe how they've done their new proximity blast phaser bursts. Hell, they just made them photon torpedoes (despite the evident dialog) and given them cheap video game detonation f/x. It doesn't hold a candle to the silent yet still very effective original effort. The new comet was also a letdown. Rather than adding to the suspense of the moment it became just "Lookee what we can do!" The close up of the new Romulan BoP with its kewl hull plating was also a letdown.

Another thing that really bugged me was the loss of some still beautiful flybys of the 11 footer. At the beginning of BoT we had a great shot of the E flying out of the distance and right at your p.o.v. as if to run you over as the lower hull comes right at you. Now it's gone. In "Space Seed" I always loved that profile shot of the E coming up alongside the derelict Botany Bay. It, too, is also now gone. )-:

I'm glad I have the original episodes in the box sets and now I don't even mind that I paid something more than I should have. Because now I can still appreciate the resourcefulness and creativity the original producers tried for under difficult circumstances.

All in all this is really little more than eye candy to make TOS f/x look more like contemporary Trek's rather than enhancing TOS' own distinctive aesthetic.
