My TOS collection right now is still on VHS tape. I'd like to replace it with DVDs at some point, although I'm not in any particular hurry.

I wouldn't buy a set that had only the remastered versions, but I wouldn't mind having a set with both versions. However, if the choice was between a set with both versions and a cheaper set with just the originals, I'd go with just the originals.

Just where the hell have you been for all these months Skipper? It's good to see you again. :)

That's pretty much my sentiment as well. Having grown up during the network run I really don't have any problem with the original effects. Everything shown was state of the art (and beyond in some cases) and my imagination did a fine job of filling in the blank spaces.

I would like a DVD set with both versions on them though.

Well, since I've only seen 2 or 3 of the redone episodes (they don't seem to be showing in the DC area) I do plan on getting the DVD's when they come out. Hopefully in a single box set vs. 3 separate season sets.

I might buy season one, IF the price is reasonable and IF it's not cropped for widescreen. However, I've been lukewarm about the episodes I've seen on TV. The remastered image looks too dark & the color seems to have been boosted unnaturally. The new effects are interesting as a novelty, but look too cartoonish overall.

I am sure it will be. Blu-Ray looks like the Betamax of the 21st century.

Not to hijack the thread, but what are you basing that comment on? Keep in mind that 75% of all hi-def movie sales (either HD-DVD or Blu-ray) in the first quarter of 2007 have been Blu-ray.

I don't think so. I have the series on DVD and really see
no need to shell out the money to buy it again.
If I ever lose the DVD's, then I will buy

Well, the comment could be taken either way. From a quality standpoint, Beta far exceeded VHS in recording and playback. The picture was clearer and there was less generational drift between copies. This is the positive meaning behind the comment.

The negative (which we are all probably thinking about) is that Beta was soundly trounced by VHS in quantity, plus the machines were generally cheaper to reproduce.

Sony went on to produce studio-quality machines in the form of BetaCam SP, which competed for the longest time with Panasonic M2's for the linear video editing market back in the early 90's. Ah, those were the days...

And so the question is: when the TOS-R dvd sets are available will you buy?

I'll have to say no. Past precedent has shown that Paramount charges exhorbitant prices for the dvd sets with TAS being the only exception. And while I'm curious enough to watch some of these remastered episodes out of technical curiosity the purist in me could never justify paying an outrageous sum for something I think has been done nearly all wrong.

Please think about your answer. It's easy enough to get emotionally carried away, but the real issue arises when it comes to putting down you're hard earned money.

That may be too much money for that.

^ I respect those who can't tolerate any alteration to TOS' original effects, but I don't share that view. I just think that the new effects in TOS-R look better. And I think they did the best they can in order to fit the new FX in with the general aesthetic of the series.

Generally, I'm a very "Special Edition" kind of fan - if new effects can help a series (or film), I'm usually for it. About the only instance where I would not be, would be 2001: A Space Odyssey. If anyone tried messing with the effects in that film, I'd be screaming. But in ST or SW, I say, let 'em have at it!

I wasn't against the project and if someone else took a crack at it, I'd definitely give it a look. I just don't think many of the things CBS Digital did ended up working.

This. I think there was a lot of curiosity and excitement when TOS-R was new, but the bloom has come off since and a lot of it leaves something to be desired.

Some time last year, I brought the remastered editions of the blu-rays. So glad I did it. It gave me a new view on TOS. Before then I had watched a dozen or so episodes of the original series.
