I am
not a TOS purist. It does have a "soft spot" for me, in that TOS was not only my first indoctrination into Star Trek, it was the first sci-fi series I'd ever seen. And years later in my young adult life, I saw TNG and immediately thought it was a bad imitation. Knowing how much I liked TOS, I'd have expected that anything Star Trek would appeal to me. But I found the series sub par, except for the special effects. But then when a rather teasing preview spot appeared about the start of Season 3, I decided to give it another try. For me TNG started with Season 3, and I liked it.
DS9 was kind of a continuation of TNG, in a different setting. What bugged me the most about it was the "soap opera" feel to it in the beginning. I didn't care if I missed an episode here or there. Then later on, things got interesting. I really liked the latter half of DS9.
VOY took some time getting used to. I certainly liked the concept... FINALLY we're getting back to deep space exploration and the encountering of unknown aliens in an unpredictable environment. I didn't like Kate Mulgrew's Janeway at first. It took a long time before I began to have respect for that character.
ENT was harder to like than VOY. The liberties they took with what had been previously established in TOS and TNG annoyed me. Thankfully they got their act together by Season 3... I was really looking forward to this series going for 7 seasons. It was a real shame it got cut down in Season 4.
It would've been easy for me to stand on a high horse saying nothing that came after TOS could ever be as good. But I kept an open mind. There are some real gems scattered about the other series. I admit, I have enjoyed them. So no, I'm no TOS purist. But if I had only one series to take with me on a desert island, it would be TOS.
