Voted outstanding on this one. I just enjoyed it all the way through. The section set during April's time was good, and it was great to see Number One again. I'm glad we got to see what she was doing during Kirk's time, I really enjoyed her interactions with both Spock and Kirk, and especially the mutual respect she and Kirk shared as fellow captains.
Really looking forward to books 2 and 3.

Really enjoying the audiobook of this! The narrator does great alien-voice. 
Cool story, too, so far. I haven't read any TOS books in a while, but the prospect of this being an Epic Trilogy Event from three authors I really like pushed me over the edge. I'm enjoying the look at April's crew. More once I've finished.

It certainly surpassed my lofty expectations. Although the blurb indicated drawing on the Enterprise's past going back to Captain April, I was expecting at most, a flashback chapter featuring April and his crew. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover a decent portion of the novel focused on April's Enterprise, to the point that it isn't entirely inaccurate to call this a Robert April novel. For that reason alone this novel is that much more awesome!
Well I guess you could say that whoever wrote the TNG episode Cost of Living thought of something similar. Where they had Lwaxana say something to the computer before entering the holodeck. And the computer replied. Probably, "Enter when ready".
Still really should be come, once. Even if it seems gratuitous. No harm in Una seeing Chapel while McCoy is unavailable.
I'm not sure what your first sentence means, but with regard to your last, there doesn't seem to be any real reason for it to happen, either, other than to satisfy some fannish desire to tick off imaginary boxes; and while that can certainly be a lot of fun, it definitely can also be gratuitous (Peter David's books in particular are full of things like this). Short of a compelling story element, I can't see any reason for Una and Chapel to interact, or even for a resemblance to be commented on; after all, if Spock hasn't mentioned it after all this time...

The '90s YA TOS Starfleet Academy trilogy had Spock and McCoy meeting in the second book, and then they meet Kirk in the third book. I think pretty every story with the characters in the academy has them meeting there.
Just finished the Kindle version and enjoyed it a lot. It actually felt like Star Trek. Too many times I've read Star Trek novels and either couldn't finish them or could barely finish them because they just seemed so foreign to the Star Trek universe or maybe they were just poorly written. Not so with this novel, I thought it was a great story especially the early years of the Enterprise with Captain April.
There were a few things that made me cringe, the biggest "one" was how Una got her name. Watching "The Menagerie", it was always obvious to me that Pike called her Number One because she was First Officer, and further confirmed by Picard calling Riker the same thing. In this novel, it was implied that it was more of a nickname. Una strived to be number one in everything she did so her friends and shipmates gave her that nickname. Really weak explanation, especially when you add on the part where Una's real name couldn't be pronounced by outsiders so she called herself Una in reference to her nickname...Una = One. Ugh! I don't know if the author created that background story or if someone else did in a previous novel but I just think it's a really contrived explanation. Anyway, enough about that. I usually don't like cliffhangers at the end of a story because most of the time I have to wait a year or two before the next novel is released. I'm glad that's not the case here.
Looking forward to reading the next two books in the series and I noticed they are written by different authors. Since they all were released close to the same time, I guess the authors were writing them simultaneously? That must have been a challenge in itself.
EDIT: I just noticed that the other two aren't released yet but will be released a month apart. I was checking Amazon.com from my iPad and mistakenly thought all 3 had been released. Still, it's better than waiting a year between novels!

Seriously, Dave, Dayton, Kevin, and I were in constant touch while writing this trilogy. We're talking LOTS of emails flying back and forth, since we all live in different parts of the country. Fortunately, we've known each other for years and are used to talking Trek . . ..
As for "Una," the idea that Number One's actual name is impossible to pronounce has been floated in TREK novels before, but since we could hardly avoid mentioning her name for three entire books, we came up with the "Una" thing together.

Well it wasn't so much her calling herself Una that I had a problem with. It seemed to me that the reason April and later Pike called her "Number One" wasn't because she was First Officer, but that they were calling her by her nickname, that just seemed odd to me but I'll get over it.
I did notice that when Una was speaking in the story, I was hearing Majel Barret's voice in my head...another sign of a well written story, at least to my standards.
Not certain what I think about the Una designation. Do find interesting the first part of April's section. How did you decide which officers to take from previous novels, Greg?
