I've just finished it and I voted outstanding.

The character I liked least is Junah. He obviously never came to terms with his sister being abducted by the Klingons. He felt neglected over the years, growing up full of hatred towards the Klingons. So I was indifferent when he was thrashed.
Elzura/Merata on the other hand was a multi-faceted character I could relate to. Dim memories of her past resurfaced, but her Klingon upbringing prevailed. For me there was only the question how Soleste would deal with it.
It was a wise approach to focus on a limited number of characters. Even Boyce had his moments :)

I also liked to see more of Pike, Boyce, Number One and a young Spock. I never missed Kirk and McCoy. Obviously there are still many stories to be told about Pike's tenure as Captain of the Enterprise. I wouldn't mind another Pike story.

More details, Greg?
From amazon:

An epic new trilogy begins—a tie-in for the milestone fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series—that stretches from the earliest voyages of the Starship Enterprise to Captain Kirk’s historic five-year-mission…and from one universe to another!

Hidden aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise is a secret that has been passed from captain to captain, from Robert April to Christopher Pike to James T. Kirk. Now the return of the enigmatic woman once known as Number One has brought that secret to light, and Kirk and his crew must risk everything to finish a mission that began with April so many years ago…

Nearly two decades earlier, April and his crew first visited the planet Usilde, where they found both tragedy and a thorny moral dilemma. Today, the legacy of that fateful occasion will compel Kirk to embark on a risky voyage back to that forbidden world—which is now deep in territory claimed by the Klingon Empire!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm finally reading this book and have to say what an incredible pleasure it's been so far (I'm about halfway through). So many things, including the multiple uses of Pike-era language and terminology, really go to make this feel like it could have been made not long after "The Cage." Greg, you have really nailed Spock's character, especially this younger version; I can easily imagine Nimoy's higher-pitched, slightly more expressive voice from the pilot as I read. I also really like the Spock/Pike relationship; it's very nearly a surrogate father/son relationship, and lays the ground nicely for Spock's extreme actions 13 years later.

Looking forward to Legacies in about a week--and I add my voice to those requesting more Pike from Greg!
