I remember the first time I saw this episode. It was after seeing the TNG episode "Sarek" and some of the Star Trek movies with Mark Lenard in them and my first thought was: Holy crap! What the hell is Spock's father doing on a Romulan ship?!?

I actually thought when everyone looked at Spock after the Romulan Commander appeared, they were doing it because they were surprised to see his father! Then I expected it to be revealed by the end of the episode that his father was, in fact, a Romulan, and they just didn't know it yet! Such an odd bit of re-casting.
