Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

The show seems to be on an upward curve in terms of the quality of the episodes, and it's not afraid to take a few risks (the Tea Party reference and Palin-like character is gonna raise a few eyebrows).

And I believed the directly named Fox News to boot.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

Holy crap. When has Torchwood become the WORST SPIES EVER. And these new characters, ALSO the worst spies ever.

How many people know they are in Los Angeles now? Rex told his father and his doctor/booty call. Esther (the not so bright, really, what did she think was going to happen with her crazy sister and the children) and Gwen tells Reese (because, you know, they wouldn't be watching him or her father.)

And, it feels like everyone just decided to become a horrible actor (except for Bill.)

And how big of a super douche bag is Rex? I really can't wait for the Miracle to pass and for him to drop dead. He's just a big complaining douche bag.

All of the diversions to the families... for me, it's killing whatever LITTLE tension they have going in the story. It's becoming distracting. And I suspect it's filler. There's not much of a story and they got 10 hours to fill.

And C. Thomas Howell... seriously? Did he study at the Acting For Bad Guys?

This episode: train wreck. I sorta missed Torchwood Season 1, at least that was good fluff. This was BAD 90's American Syndicated sci-fi. Like Time Traxx or something.

I REALLY hope this gets better.

The big bad? Mark my words, it will be:

Owen Harper

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

^ Maybe I've missed something, but I don't see how that's even remotely possible.

I enjoyed the episode and liked it better than last week's. It was good to see Torchwood on an elaborate mission with action and stuff. I agree that Esther erred in going to see her nutso sister, but Rex needs to chill out.

And I liked whosever idea it was that the "Jack's past" issue was related to that missing period of time when he was a Time Agent. Looking forward to next week, despite the familiar Gwen-making-a-video bit in the trailer.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

I don't want to go into to details, but there are some parallels between the way people are living and the way my proposed big bad was at one point.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

The line about how we've already decided to shove old people out of our lives was a thematic shout out. In Children of Earth, it was sacrificing some children to become cogs in a (social) machine for the pleasure/benefit of a few. In this one, it's old people. The thing is, that this metaphor doesn't fit US reality as well. Maybe in UK cutting the National Health Service makes it more relevant. But until Social Security really gets cut, this metaphor is more about a future thought lots of people don't believe in, not a present reality. There are no equivalents to school leaving tables or privileged elders in this presentation.

In addition to being a little too schematic a rewrite of Children of Earth, the hamfisted rewrite of Owen Harper as Rex is really tiresome. His arc wasn't one of the best things about the original Torchwood. (Opinions will probably differ. I thought the louche first season was overall a little better than the second season precisely because I thought the Owen Harper angstfest fundamentally dreary.) Even if you liked it more than I did, once was enough.

Bill Pullman is blowing John Barrowman out of the water, which is odd considering that English actors are always, always better than American actors.

Average episode, and I predict average series.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

Solid episode, things are really kicnking into gear. The specialized hospital for the supposed-to-be-dead with people just being abandoned is an interesting idea, and we continue to see some rather creative circumstances in which people continue to live through some really horrible accidents, like the mayor(?) being crushed in the end.

On the nitpick side of things, how the hell is Rex still able to function? The guy leaks blood and his chest wound must be getting worse. Sure, he can't die, but at this point, I can't imagine it's possible for him to move at all.

Rhys was really pointless this week, really the only reason I can see for him being there was contractual obligations. And isn't it a bit of backwards development to have him constantly calling Gwen up while she's on a mission? This isn't season 1 where he was ignorant of Torchwood, nor is this season 2 where he was trying to fit in with the gang. By now, he knows damn well what's going on and how important/dangerous it is so it makes no sense for him to constantly phone Gwen. Of course, Gwen could try telling him "don't phone during these hours." Still, at least his scene at the end seemed to be setting up for something important next week, and the trailer seems to support this.

So Jilly Kissinger now dislikes Oswald? Well, yeah, he is a twisted bastard, but her hating him as much as she claimed seems a bit out of the blue compared to how she's been behaving the past couple of weeks.

The special ops psycho that was after Jack and Gwen is kind of a questionable addition. In this tale of corrupted CIA agents working with an Evil Corporation we know have an uspecified Third Party with an agenda of their own? Well, we'll see where this goes.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

I can't help but feel I'd like this series much better if I was watching it on DVD or something like that in one go.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

But that's true about all tv.

We're pampered

I did two seasons of Farscape without getting off the couch once.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

Above average. A bit better than the last couple. I could've done without the social services angst of Ester's sister. And, they made Ester extra dumb for that scene where she visited her. I mean, come on, of course they had it staked out!

But, it was nice how they cranked up the action.

Oh, and it was weird how the assassing guy was shot, and then didn't get up. I mean, come on, people don't die now. You don't just shoot them and they're down. They're probably in massive pain but not dead!

You got a point, that is true.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

Doesn't the assassin's "body" lying there put a wrench in their whole steal-without-anyone-knowing-they've-stolen plan? Who wants to bet it never comes up again, though?

I think it's weird how dumb Esther was in this episode; in the first two, she was way smarter than Rex.

The villains of this are too mua-ha-ha-ha bad guys, what with the ranting and the mysterious symbols. I preferred Children of Earth, where even the (human) villains were people trying to make the best of an awful situation.

Well they were planning to torch the place, so the plan will still work since the bad guys will think the data was destroyed in the fire.

It's not weird. Stressed out, tired people make mistake. What is weird is she didn't reach the Torchwood level of incompetence.

Well what do you expect from Pink Floyd

I don't think they were planning on torching the whole place (which, actually, would make sense). If so, why waste time torching the server components with the hand torch before they took it over?

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

I'm trying so hard to keep caring about this series of Torchwood...but it just feels like they are biding their time so much...so little seems to be going on. I'm still watching, hoping that it will take off...as I've read others say, it feels like they are fitting five episodes of plot into ten.

And for an organization that is supposedly under surveillance, the team seems to be able to travel cross country with no problems...other than the Big Bad Triangle Family tracking them, of course...I guess you could make the point that with all the undead piling up that the government has bigger things to worry about...

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

I haven't seen the episode yet, and this thread has not spoiled a single thing for me. That's not a good sign.

I can't help but think that Miracle Day was supposed to be 5 episodes like Children of Earth, but Starz forced them to do a longer 10 episode season. The first three episodes could easily have been compressed into one.

Because very very little ACTUALLY happened that advanced the story.

Lots of phone calls to people (don't tell anyone that I'm in LA), visits to sisters, to dads (don't tell anyone that I'm in LA). Lots of characters talking about the past. Honestly, until the last 15, 20 minutes, not much happened.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day 4x04 - 'Escape To LA' (Grade/Discuss) SPOIL

I feel it's gotten better as it's gone on, I felt this episode was a little worse than last weeks, which is still an improvement IMO. Oh, wasn't one of the other Torchwood teams "Missing under mysterious circumstances"? If so, I wonder if it's them that's behind this. Maybe they found the other "glove" and decided to disappear and use the tech to get rich off of selling drugs or something.

I think you're referring to Torchwood 4, which according to Jack, disappeared but were expected to return one day.

Yeah, that was kinda my point. Four episodes in and nothing has happened that I didn't already know about from the promo. Judging from the first three episodes it's fairly entertaining nothing, but I didn't wait over two years for this.
