Top Ten Movies of Summer '08

Well it's Labor Day and the summer movie season has officially ended. What are your top ten? Thanks to the gas hikes I went to the movies about half as much as I used to, but I still managed to see 12 movies this summer.

#10 HULK. Disappointing but serviceable.
#9 NARNIA. Better than the first but not spectacular. More action, darker.
#8 MUMMY 3. Not nearly as good as the first two but I still enjoyed it. Loved the Yetis!
#7 TROPIC THUNDER. Very funny, great actors, but also an expensive action movie!
#6 KUNG FU PANDA. So much better than I ever thought; gorgeous CGI, great action scenes, moderately funny. It actually managed to tell a good action epic story with good characters. And Jack Black wasn't annoying!

#5 CLONE WARS. I enjoyed it a great deal, had no probs with the CGI, had lots of great action, but the stupid droids do drag it down a little.
#4 DARK KNIGHT. It's a great movie but the final act just completely falls apart. Like Spider-Man 3 you introduce a major in the last 15 minutes and then just use him immediately in an anti-climactic ending. And Bale's "scary" voice is still silly.
#3 IRON MAN. My favorite non-X Marvel movie. Coulda used more action as always, but great story and humor and character work.
#2 HELLBOY 2. Wow this one blew me away. It was just so much FUN. So imaginative. Amazing visuals. Great action. Absolutely hilarious. I laughed harder at this movie than any other this year. My only complaint is the ending ignores the larger world and the bad guy ends up being just one guy rather than part of a society/group.

#1 INDIANA JONES. While it definitely wasn't as good as the originals, it was still a magical nostalgic experience. The opening Area 51 sequence and the jungle jeep chase were two classic action set pieces. I didn't really care for "Mutt" and the ending was a bit of a do-nothing, but looking back on it, Indy did nothing in the ending of Raiders either. He just sat there tied to a post. So at least they're following tradition.

TOP FIVE I MISSED BUT WANT TO SEE:
#5 HANCOCK. A "super hero" movie with no action and no villain? I already saw that in Superman Returns. Pass. Still, it might be okay. And I do love Bateman.
#4 X-FILES. This used to be my favorite show but I could give a fig about it now. Still it could be nostalgic.
#3 PINEAPPLE EXPRESS. Should be funny.
#2 WALL-E. Pixar? Great. Sci-Fi? Great. No dialogue? Hurum.
#1 WANTED. I loved the comic and poo-poo-ed the movie which removed every single good aspect of the comic (costumes, super powers, alternate earths, comic book parodies). I predicted this would bomb. But after it did $130 mil domestic, I've started to really regret missing this.

BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE SUMMER: Kung Fu Panda. I didn't even really want to see this, but it was great! It wasn't some dumb kiddie movie, but a great kung fu action story with gorgeous visuals. Wow!

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE SUMMER: Get Smart. I like Steve Carrell and I remember liking Get Smart. But I had no interest in seeing this; I only did b/c it was my sister's birthday. And I found it completely uninteresting and by the numbers. And unfunny.

I've only seen 9 'summer' movies so here's my Top 9 -

1. Wall-E. Absolute Genius.
2. Iron Man. Great comic book fun and perfect casting.
3. Tropic Thunder. Laugh-Out-Loud funny and brilliant performances by Robert Downey Jnr and Tom Cruise.
4. The Dark Knight. A good movie riddled with annoying faults.
5. Wanted. Much better than I thought it would be.
6. Hulk. It ticked all the "Hulk Smash" boxes.
7. Hancock. Great in parts, dumb in others but Will Smith is always worth watching.
8. Kung Fu Panda. A Big Mac to Wall-E's sumptous meal but enjoyable at the time.
9. Indy IV. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Biggest Surprise - Not being a big fan of Ben Stiller and Jack Black, I loved Tropic Thunder

Biggest Disappointment - Tight call between the "worse than I feared it would be" Indy IV and the "I thought this was supposed to be an instant classic" The Dark Knight. I'll go with Indy because TDK is still so much better than the early Batman movies while Indy IV sullies the original trilogy.

I rather liked Hancock and I thought it was a nice surprise. A lot better than Superman Returns, IMO, though mainly because the ending worked better.

The Dark Knight is at the top of my list with Iron Man and WALL-E below it. I liked INDY IV, but it was tied with TOD in my book. Haven't seen any besides those over the summer.

1 The Dark Knight Practically perfect in every way

2 Iron Man so close to perfection

3 Kung Fu Panda i was prepared for Awesome and it came

4 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull not nearly as bad as people make out

5 The Incredible Hulk incredibly better than '03

6 Hancock funny

7 The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor good

8 Star Wars: The Clone Wars not as shit as people claim

I also did not get to go to the movies as much as most summers due to my job. I really wished I could have watched Get Smart and Pineapple Express but the others that I missed I could wait for DVD. Here is my list of my favorites of Summer 2008:

1. WALL-E
2. The Dark Knight
3. Iron Man
4. Hellboy II - The Golden Army
5. The Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian
6. The Incredible Hulk
7. The X-Files - I Want To Believe
8. Kung Fu Panda
9. Hancock
10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
11. The Mummy - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Hmmm...I don't think I've even seen 10 movies yet this summer (which is a bizarre contrast to last year).

1. The Dark Knight
2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
3. Iron Man
4. The Incredible Hulk
5. WALL-E
6. The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Yup, only six movies.

I wanted to see Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Capsian, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and maybe Hancock but I never got the chance in theaters.

I've seen Wall-E, loved it, and didn't even notice the lack of dialogue in the first however many minutes it was.

I really liked Dark Knight, Wall-E, The Strangers, and The Happening. Everything else I saw was meh: Indy, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, and Traitor. And Mirrors - that was horrible.

I don't know if I saw 10 summer movies this year but what I did see:

The Dark Knight - Absolutely brilliant movie and Ledger came as advertised. I think this one might actually have Oscar potential, or at least it should.

Iron Man - Probably the biggest surprise of the summer. Great movie and probably my favorite non batman comic book movie since Spider Man.

Wall-E - Absolutely beautiful film. The middle kind of slows things down but the beginning and end make up for it.

Wanted - It wasn't a good film, but based on what I've seen this summer it was serviceable. Kind of hard to root for anyone though and I called the twist like 20 minutes before the movie showed it.

Hancock - Forgettable in every way

Pineapple Express - I kind of felt guilty watching it after I left the theater. It was funny and I like Rogen, but the subject matter left a lot to be desired, and there were a lot of unnecessary plot elements.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Chrystal Skull - Massive disappointment. Right up there with Transformers and Spider Man 3 last year.

Here is where I summed up my Summer Movies as I declared my personal "Summer Movie Season" over once I saw Tropic Thunder -although I did also see Death race. You can still see my grading in my signature as well.

Overall, I think it was a great Summer for movies!

:)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Fun, nostalgic, even if it could have used a stronger script and didn't use so much computer generated imagery.

Iron Man: Funny and slick, even if it loses points for its confused, pandering politics.

The Incredible Hulk: Improved upon Ang Lee's film in every way. Smarter, more fun, and with a slew of nice homages to the Kenneth Johnson television series. The ending is SO ready for the Avengers movie.

The X-Files I Want To Believe: Small, character based movie released in the wrong season against the wrong movie. Not the note I want to see the franchise go out on, but there was some sense of finality in this highly underrated movie.

The Dark Knight: This movie is no Godfather Part II, despite the hype, but it still is one of the best superhero movies ever made (and probably the best of the summer, with some strong competition, too). Heath Ledger was impressive, regardless of the circumstances around his death.

Hellboy II The Golden Army: Better than the original on every level. More creative, funnier, and ripe for a sequel. Ron Perlman is the only actor who will be able to play big Red.

Tropic Thunder: Comedies this summer were abysmal, but Tropic Thunder emerged from the pack with big laughs. Robert Downey Jr. has more exposure now than ever, which is entirely a good thing. Ben Stiller is totally boring in the film as an actor, but he shows promise with his skills as a co-writer/director.

Pineapple Express: The Judd Apatow factory starts to flounder, but still funny enough, even with the jarring styles.

Wall-E: Every critic who claimed this movie invoked "subtle social commentary" should have their head examined, but it was still a wonderful movie, even while deploying social commentary with less subtlety than sledgehammer.

Vicky Christina Barcelona: Painful voice over narration doesn't keep Woody Allen down. His best film since Match Point.

Redbelt: It may have been officially released earlier this year, but I didn't see it until the summer. Easily my favorite film (so far) of 2008.

There were some good movies this summer, but I am so done with the big dumb movie season. Actually, I was tired out with it all a month ago. I could easily go eight months without having to see another blockbuster movie. I look forward to independent film and/or Oscar Bait.

Best: "The Dark Knight" - A superb film, plain and simple. No need to couch it with "a great comic book movie" - TDK is a great movie.

Worst: "Indiana Jones" - Good lord what a mess this movie is. Terrible performances, bad pacing, poor CG effects... nothing about this movie works. I laughed AT it more than I laughed with it. A complete and utter misfire.

The Rest: "Iron Man" was good fun. "Incredible Hulk" wasn't nearly as good as the Ang Lee version. "Wall*E" was a great time. "Hancock" was interesting, funny, but doesn't capitalize on its potential. "Hellboy II" was pretty good, but I think I preferred the first one. "Tropic Thunder" was hilarious.

I don't think I've seen 10 movies...

1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. Wall-E
4. Tropic Thunder
5. The Incredible Hulk
6. Get Smart
7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
8. The X-Files: I Want To Believe

And I liked all of them, damnit!!!

I only saw 9. From best to worst on a pure enjoyment level I'd probably rank them...

1. Iron Man
2. Indiana Jones IV
3. Dark Knight
4. Incredible Hulk
5. Hellboy II: The Golden Army
6. Star Wars: Clone Wars
7. The X-Files: I Want To Believe
8. The Happening
9. Hancock

10. Wall*E - Sorry but this is a kids movie wrapped to tightly around adult themes. Not enough narrative.

9. Journey to the Center of the Earth - Brendan Fraser makes my top 10 list just not with the movie I would've thought. Great family movie and the 3-D aspect sold this movie.

8. Hellboy 2 - What a great follow-up to the first installment. This sequel didn't have the slow spots like the first where they are explaining things. It dove in and was a great ride. I only hope it gets a sequel

7. Get Smart - Steve Carrell was good and the story worked on most levels but it lacked that something more.

6. Death Race - Why? Because it promised and delivered on exactly the film it set out to be. It was fun, mindless fun sure, action packed and made no excuses for that.

5. Pineapple Express - Apatow, Rogen deliver again this time mixing James Franco in. It might have been better and tighter with 10 or so minutes edited out.

4. The Incredible Hulk - Redeemed the character from the '03 fiasco. Was a good action movie and will only get better on DVD.

3. Tropic Thunder - Loved it. Best comedy of the summer imo. While Stiller and Black were adequate the rest of the cast was great. With the most kudos going to Robert Downey Jr. The movie is poised to cross $100m before its run is over now.

2. The Dark Knight - A really great movie. Saw it three times. Hope Nolan gets all the sun and umbreall drinks he can handle and comes back with a desire for a follow up.

1. Iron Man - May just be the best Marvel adapted movie to date. Was more fun than TDK and that is why its ranked tied for #1. Saw it 4 times.

1. Indiana Jones:Crystal Skull - Also saw this 4 times, hence the tie. I found the movie to be lots of fun. Had it not dovetailed a tad to "alien-esque" at the end I would've given it my #1 on its own. Can't wait to add it to my collection and imo was as Indy a movie as the 3 before it.

Most dissapointing movie - X-Files: I Want to Believe - this was the movie you came back with after such a hiatus? It wasn't horrid but I was believing in getting something better. Its just nudges out Mummy 3 and Prince Caspian for this title.

Most surprising movie - Journey to the Center of the Earth - It really worked as a family film, a comedy and an action film.

Movies I didn't get around to but are instantly in my Netflix queue:
-The Happening
-Hancock
-Kung Fu Panda
-Clone Wars
-Sex and the City
-Mama Mia!
-The House Bunny (still time I know)
-Speed Racer(only one on here that was a Netflix movie from the start)

I don't even care at this point to add Love Guru or Zohan into my queue. Thats right I'd rather see Speed Racer and Mama Mia over those two.

Well, since there are three more weeks of summer and couple of biggies coming out, I'll hold off on my summer list for now.

Calendar summer yes, but this is for Hollywoods summer slate. May thru Labor Day.
You could list those.
Besides what are you calling a remaining "biggie"? Eagle Eye? Igor? Wait I got it, Beverly Hills Chihuahua?:lol:

Yeah, didn't think Indy would be that popular here :D It's still the #2 highest worldwide grosser though!

I just saw DEATH RACE today. It was better than I expected but I certainly wouldn't place it in the top ten. Pretty good dumb action flick.

By the way for those interested, the top ten grossing movies so far according to wiki:

10. Mummy 3 $294 mil international, $98 domestic
9. Horton Hears A Who! $296 / $155
