TOP 5 TV theme songs...

Just five? Now that's hard.

1. M*A*S*H (Johnny Mandel)
2. MillenniuM (Mark Snow)
3. Dynasty (Bill Conti)
4. The Cosby Show (Bill Cosby & Stu Gardner; Season 5 version)
5. Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (William Olvis)

I think that anytime you have to cite a specific season you've lost the point of the original question. IMO.

Not when a series uses entirely different stylelistic themes from each season.

And one should not the vast majority of themes cited in this thread -- including half by the original poster -- are NOT songs.

I just mean that a truly great theme song is iconic-if you hear the opening of the song you think of the show. When a show rotates its theme every season or two you lose the monolithic approach, leaving it malleable and, ultimately, rendering it unimportant. Certainly, such a series of themes fails to reach Top 5 status at the very least. Of the five shows you cite, only one brings music to my mind when reading the name-MASH.

5. Space: 1999 (series one)
4. Man in a Suitcase
3. The Tomorrow People (original)
2. The Adventures of Black Beauty
1. Doctor Who

But it's beside the point, as this thread about the music, not one's opinion on changing themes. And series change themes all the time. "Nash Bridges" had four different themes. "The Pretender" had four or five (the season 3 being my favorite).

Even iconic themes like "Dynasty" changed. Thats show's theme changed it's beginning and end. And that show, and ST:TNG, Gunsmoke, and M*A*S*H all re-recorded their themes multiple times (though kept them near the same).

Again, it's about the music. Pure and simple.

Not in any particular order but 5 I like are:
1. Thunderbirds
2. Mission Impossible
3. Airwolf
4. S.W.A.T.
5. The Professionals (which has the best openning credits of any British TV show IMHO)

Impossible to choose just 5. I hate that the trend today is to do away with themes. It's probably just my suceptibility to nostalgia, but I LOVE the old sitcom ballads! A few that haven't been mentioned:

Gimme a Break (Nell Carter was AWESOME0
Punky Brewster (! I had this memorized from childhood - can still sing it on demand)
227
Family Ties
Just the Ten of Us
One Day at a Time
Small Wonder
Out of This World
The Torklesons
Silver Spoons
Step by Step
Facts of Life
Golden Girls
Growing Pains
Webster
Kids Incorporated

Round the Twist
Ox Tales
Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex S1
Kino's Journey
Rentaghost

EDIT: End theme to The Raccoons (Run With Us, Lisa Lougheed)

#1 - Dexter
#2 - Hogan's Heroes
#3 - Farscape (first season)
#4 - The Munsters
#5 - Mission: Impossible

But ask me tomorrow and you'll get a different list. :D

1. The Sopranos - if ever a theme fit a show, that was it. The song, combined with those visuals of Tony and his cigar on the the drive to Jersey, was just perfect.

Others that I really liked: DS9, B5 (selected seasons), Falcon Crest, The Rockford Files (including the answering machine call of the week! Those were hilarious!), and Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis.

Just off the top of my head

Sanford and Son
Cheers
Angel
The Munsters
The Odd Couple

That's right, you all now have the theme from The Odd Couple in your head!!

Honorable mention to The Mary Tyler Moore Show

In no order...

The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Bob Newhart Show (the later version was my favorite)
St. Elsewhere
Taxi
Star Trek

Speaking of MTM, I found this cut of the theme which I've never heard before.

Same song, just no lyrics. Interesting!

Honorable mentions

Chicago Story (Who actually remembers this short-lived series?)

I pretty much agree with almost everyone here... some great themes...

But I cant believe no one has brought up NIGHT COURT! Probably one of the best TV themes I can remember... I still get this stuck in my head from time to time and I'm only 26...

Pretty tough to cut it down to five. After much thought, in chronological order:

1. The Andy Griffith Show. I don't have much to say about this one, it's just perfect.

2. Emergency! A loud, brash big band theme from Nelson Riddle. It is all action, from the days when themes were meant to be big and bold. It also has instrumental siren and EKG-type sounds thrown in.

3. The Rockford Files. Somehow, the harmonica and synth combination perfectly captures the laid-back private eye in bustling L.A. The best version is after season three, with the hot Larry Carlton guitar solo. The first TV show theme I remember hearing on the radio.

4. Taxi
. A simple, bittersweet flute melody leading into a mellow, jazzy electric piano theme. It established a real heart for a hilarious comedy.

5. Hill Street Blues. Another Mike Post classic. A halting and wistful piano intro makes the whole thing. An evocative, melancholy theme that set the tone for a show that was serious and sometimes sad but never a downer.

Runners up:

The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. I always used to hear how much money Paul Anka made from this, and he deserved it. When you heard that big brass section blasting out the theme song, you knew you were going to get some big entertainment and it was worth staying up late.

Hawaii Five-O. Another iconic theme, you can't hear those big drums without thinking of the breaking wave, that huge zoom-in to Jack Lord, and those guys paddling that outrigger canoe at the end.

Perry Mason. The tense strings and stings at the beginning used to be a little scary to me as a kid, but are a nice set-up for the requisite murder, then the theme rolls on catchily and confidently, as Perry inevitably rolls through the court case.
