Toho is making their own Godzilla movies again!

Nomad, interesting revelation about Godzilla's appearance in "Monster Planet". I've seen several videos on YouTube about the project from a particular person. (I won't mention the name as I understand that's somehow against the TOS here.) Poor schmoe has been majorly whining for months about there being no kind of "reveal" for the "Big 'G'". I wonder what will be his reaction now that Goji's design has been presented?

Most reactions I've seen are lukewarm on it. It's unobjectionable, basically the G14 look with more prominent dorsal plates. But many were hoping that, since this is anime, the design would be more innovative, maybe even a little crazy. I hope they at least make the eyes larger; the squinty look was my biggest complaint about the G14 design.

That is really agravating that Japanese version has so much more content than ours. Is there any chance we might get either as English version of the 3-disc set or at least an edition with more than just one featurette?

Wow, I was not expecting that at all, since this was animated, I figure they'd go for something very different.

It's doubtful we'll ever get we want in the way of extras. For some reason, Toho saves those for the Japanese market. I can't recall a North American release of any of their movies that ever had much in the way of special features.

That is annoying, but I guess since we're a secondary market they must figure it's not worth doing more stuff for us. Would it be too complicated to just change the text to English, and add subtitles to the Japanese version?

Some western releases have done their own bonus material. Both Classic Media in North America, as well as the Austria-based company Anolis for the German market, have done featurettes and commentary tracks for their Toho DVDs, though they had to rely heavily on still photography, posters and concept art, and western experts giving second-hand information.
Some of the Anolis DVDs used footage produced by Jörg Buttgereit from his documentary "Die Monsterinsel" (The Island of Monsters), like an interview with suit-actor Haruo Nakajima or a piece on G-Fest.

As for that design, it really is just the Legendary design, but we should keep in mind that this is still a teaser poster, so the design might not be final.

There's a strange creature at 00:18 that appears to be plant-like. Biollante, perhaps? It also has a slight resemblance to Hedorah. Anyway, Godzilla has his familiar roar, except for the growl at the end. Can't tell much about his appearance. I don't know a lot about Polygon, so I can't judge the animation here compared to their other works.

I like the look of it, although it was all so fast it was hard to get a real good feel for it.

The character design and lighting reminds me of "Ghost in the Shell" (leaning more towards the televised "Stand Alone Complex" as opposed to the theatrical anime). Hmm... the Major vs. Godzilla. Poor lizard doesn't stand a chance! ;)

Being animated, dubbing might not look as obvious as in the old movies, but I think we'd be losing something special.

If anything, dubbed anime often has better lip sync than the original, since a lot of anime has a tendency to just flap the lips and not bother to sync to dialogue. Although with an intricately made production like this, they might do lip sync after all. Either way, though, I almost always prefer to watch something in its original language when possible.

I worked at a hobby shop in the 80's & 90's. I remember stocking anime VHS tapes. Obviously not enough room for dub & sub, so more often than not, 2 tapes of every movie.

I hope the DVD's & blu-rays do both options on one disc. They should sell the same numbers of discs, but only have to manufacture half as many.

It turns out that the creatures in the teaser are called Servum. They're 97% genetically the same as Godzilla, so apparently a spin-off species. According to this information, both Godzilla and the Servum have metallic skin tissue, and can emit an EM pulse.

Since this movie will be released on Netflix after the Japanese opening, I wonder if that makes it more or less likely to be subbed rather than dubbed. I don't have Netflix, so what do they usually do with foreign-made films? As others have said, dubbing is more tolerable with animation, but I'd still prefer subtitles.

It seems to me, with DVDs/blu-rays already having different language options, plus optional CC, a movie like this should be able to be played any way you like.

I'm pretty sure most, if not all, anime DVDs and Blu-Rays have the English and Japanese language tracks. It's pretty standard for most DVDs and Blu-Rays to have multiple language tracks, even most big American Hollywood movies have at least French and Spanish along with other English options like different surround setups, commentary tracks, and audio descriptions.
Netflix also has multiple language options for at least some of their anime. I just checked Naruto, Bleach, and Fairy Tale and they all had both English and Japanese audio options.

I'm not a fan of the CG art syle, but I've been getting more into Godzilla in the last 6 months or so, so I'm definitely interested in this. I especially like that its coming to Netflix, which is very convenient.
