Today's "music"

^^ Wow, and I have no idea who any of those bands are. Thats not a bad thing, so please don't take it that way. It just shows how out of it people get when they get to my age...

Rob

Well you should definitely check out Them Crooked Vultures if you wanna hear some fresh modern sounding rock made by some of the best in the industry.

John Paul Jones is the bassist and he still sounds absolutely amazing.

I listen to what ever I want...I could care less about trends...I don't listen to the radio or anything...I just download what I like and go with it.

Am I the only person who doesn't get hung up on what is popular?

all of the 3 chord nu-metal kids have just been replaced with scene kids and their crappy post-punk/garage rock/"art" rock crap.

Pfft, that was so 7 years ago. They play synth pop and new wave now.

This kind of shit makes me want to hang myself. It's like his parents neutered him and he spent most of his teen years crying and wishing he had friends who liked to blow bubbles as much as he did. Seriously, what kind of "man" grows up dreaming about writing shit like this? "I want to write songs 12 year old girls listen to while they brush their hair!"

More great reviews of "Fireflies":

"This sucks in ways people are just beggining to understand."

"Worse than Stalin. A little better than Hitler, though."

"Hey man, you got 1,000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs. That means 9/10 lightning bugs think you're a douche."

(This one's a bit of an obscure reference, but...) "why do you keeping singing when you mean stupid things? You should be silent all the time."

I think there's not really any lack of good music coming out today. I listen to just as many songs from the past decade than the 80s and 90s, actually. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be much great or exceptional music being made, and most of it that is great is made by artists active in the 80s and 90s. But that's just my opinion as someone who was born in the late 80s and likes 80s/90s "alternative" rock mostly.

Yeah, I got their new (only) CD and it rocks my socks off. I like Muse well enough and I do have a weakness for Paramore.

Okay..I'm going to get their album. At least I'll seem a little hip to my daughter who will wonder what the hell Im listening too since all she listens to is silly music. Rhiana and things like that..

Though, she did get me to listen to Lady Gaga who I ended up liking....

I'd agree with you, and I think it's part of the reason why albums sales are way down. Why pay for crap? And since the 30+ crowd is buying all the $100 concert tickets these days, the established bands from the 90s and before are the ones doing the biggest concert tour business as well.

For 2009, biggest concert tour revenues (U2 is #1):

"The only hip-hop act to make the top 50 is rapper Lil Wayne, who brought in $32.1 million in 58 shows, a feat he's unlikely to repeat in 2010 given the one-year prison sentence he's facing after pleading guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon."

Most of the list is populated by the likes of Dave Matthews, the Stones, Madonna, Springsteen, and the occasional Jonas Brothers/Brittany Spears/Miley Sirus that children beg their kids to take them to. But when real people with actual money put their dollars down for themselves, it's pretty clear what people are spending their money on.

I know. I did too. But the more you listen to her the more she gets stuck in your head. Eventually, I think you get bewitched into loving her.

Well, when compared with others in her 'field' (female pop) I think she's light years ahead of them. She writes her own stuff, and I thought her song Speechless was very good...

I have no plans on listening to her more...believe me I tried...it isn't for me...plus I don't like her voice.

Even if you don't like her, you at least have to give her credit for being original and having her own style.

I am not knocking her talent...It just doesn't appeal to me...that type of music doesn't appeal to me too much anyway...I like some pop though.

Dont worry..I had the same problems back in the 'day' with David Bowie. My friends liked him for his 'strangeness' and being different..I thought he was, and still is, an awful singer...but millions love the dude, so what do I know?

Rob

I was always a bit behind. I'm 28, but identify more with the 60s and 70s for music. Can't really stand much of the new 'popular' music, to be honest, just sounds like noise. I mostly enjoy Country for new stuff these days, seems a little more interesting, and something I can actually listen to.

I read all this-and snickered. Someone went on about how original music is dead, there aren't any great new bands, etc. I said the same thing in 1981-the only originality on the air was Prince and Madonna. Everything else seemed a re-hash of 70s album rock. Then stuff like The Smiths, Camper Van Beethoven, The Pixies, JFA, etc hit and it was all new again.

For some modern "great" groups might I suggest MUSE, Coldplay or The White Stripes? And if they have staying power The Killers are pretty good. I may have cut my teeth on the Beatles and their peers but I've tried to stay at least a little hip. Modest Mouse is a personal fav and I really dig The Gorillaz. The way music is listened to and the tech out today does allow a lot of crap to get made and heard-but it also gives creative opportunities to people who might not have had any under the record company system of prior decades.

My appreciation of most new music ended around 1991. Aside from Barenaked Ladies, I don't think I bought more than 1 album from a new artist since then. I do listen to some new country, I appreciate the musicianship in Brad Paisley's work, but for the most part I have stayed with rock/pop from the 60s - 80s.

I am also going back and listening to older jazz from the 50s and 60s. John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis are my current favorites.

^^ My current 'trend' is toward Jazz piano...love the stuff..

I know Them Crooked Vultures have already been mentioned upthread, but I gotta say the album was all kinds of awesome. Definitely not like anything I've heard for a while, but still sounding like it could have sprung from a number of musical eras. Really great album, I hope they continue and this wasn't just a one-off project deal.
And an album out soon which I can only assume from the newest single is gonna be absolutely sweeeet is Black Key' Brothers. Cannot wait. So yeah, there is totally still new rockin' music coming out in this age of Gaga!

I know I will get laughed at..but I did like David (American Idol champ two years ago) Cook's first album. I will buy his second album when it comes out later this year...
