To Whom Should the Movie Mantle Pass Post-Abrams

I think the trick will be finding a director who has similar tastes to J.J. or someone without a lot of influence who can do J.J.'s bidding while he finishes Star Wars.
Maybe we'll finally get that "Spock shoots JFK" film.

People are most likely to disagree with these choices, but I'd really like to see what Duncan Jones could do with Star Trek. He would be new to the franchise, but well versed in SCIFI. I think he did a great job with Moon and he uses a mix of real props and CGI berry well. As for writers, I agree with bringing in old Trek writers like RDM and here's where I get killed... Manny Coto. I think Coto was really good with the last season of Enterprise and deserves a second chance. I'd also like to add Seth McFarlane to the list and maybe even a left fielder like Trey Parker. I think that would make an interesting team of Trek vets and non-Trek vets who are familiar with the material. Two good comedy writers and two Trek vets could make for an interesting movie and I have no doubt Jones could piece it all together.
Why not Matt Groenig or Hanna/Barbera?
Heck, just keep it in the family and give it to Rod Roddenberry. 
Seriously, the franchise should be run by a single executive producer. Someone who can oversee the big picture while choosing an appropriate director for each project, and at the same time stroke the corporate suits. Like what Berman did, but someone with a little less tunnel vision.
In this capacity, RDM might be an excellent choice.

I'd almost agree with this, but Paramount would probably give him an "Executive Consultant" title and ignore every one of his memos. As Yogi Berra said, deja vu all over again.
I like Firefly, but Serenity lacked the fun of the series and poorly used most of the characters (it's odd that a two-hour movie gave much of the cast less to do than many of the show's 42 minute episodes). I disliked Avengers when I saw it in the theatre and haven't returned to it since.
Given his experience directing the pilot for Game of Thrones, I don't think Tom McCarthy is ever going to say yes to directing a big genre piece again. He would be an interesting choice, though.

Basically I think anyone who believes Abrams is going to jump ship from Star Wars to return to Trek is kidding themselves. SW is the franchise he was actually a fan of, the one he wanted to do.

It can be said with very little hyperbole that Star Trek and 'Into Darkness' were Abrams' audition tapes for the job.
