Hasn't "Trek" become a modern pop culture myth like heroes who started in the print medium (James Bond, Sherlock Holmes) or in comic books? How many continuities are there for Batman, for example? Is there one canon for Superman? James Bond is a cold war creation who is still young and in his fighting prime in the 21st century...
These "modern" myths are subject to reinterpretation by new artists and writers. Is this any less valid for a franchise that was initially created for the screen? Being reinvented or reinterpreted means that the franchise has graduated a new level - that of mythic stature.
It seems like a good thing to me!
