Finally bought an Amazon Fire. This was my first purchase. Quite good. As others have said, this felt like an episode of the show, and that's a good thing. I have only read a handful of modern TNG books, and while I've enjoyed most of them, they seem to focus on political intrigue quite a bit. It's nice to read a standalone adventure. Plenty of room for both.
Paper Moon does a better job of expressing my thoughts on the book that I ever could so I'll just quote him:
The story was well-constructed, the dialogue was well-written and true to the characters as they've been presented in canon, the balance among the characters (and between canon and non-canon characters) was ideal for me, and, most importantly, the story made the Nexus more compelling than Generations did and complemented that movie's story, enhancing both.
A few comments, questions, and such:
- There is a bit of dialog that reads "The threat of the Machine, the Borg invasion, and the rise of the Typhon Pact..." What is the
Machine?
- “Did the ship get destroyed again?” Worf is surprisingly great as the first officer.
- Is Kolb a character that we have previously seen?
- Where is Guinan these days?
- I had the same thoughts about the time travel aspects as bfollowell, but I quickly decided to leave those sorts of questions to the DTI guys.
- I like the fact that the events of Destiny are still being dealt with.
- Kolb's ultimate fate was one of the highlights of the book. Generations would have been a better movie if Malcolm McDowell had gotten that kind of sendoff. It's such a good scene that i wonder if it would have been better as an epilogue.
I'd be all for more of these a year, be a neat way to have an Aventine only adventure.
