TNG Returns!

I was going to make that same point. Although I imagine the TNG characters would show up in some compacity, this seems like it's a Picard show, and not a TNG revival.

I'd be shocked if we don't see several (if not all) Next Gen cast members announced as signing on in major roles in the coming months. Given the critical and financial success of other recent revival miniseries events/belated series finales (Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, 24: Live Another Day, Twin Peaks: The Return) I'd imagine Kirsten motherfucking Beyer and Patrick Stewart are thinking "Well, Next Gen ended with the wet fart that was Nemesis. Let's do this properly".

Stewart and Picard will surely be the main focus, but this will almost certainly be a Next Gen revival/grand finale event.

I could cope with a CGI Data, looking exactly as he did at Farpoint. Prefer it even.

If Spiner can’t do the voice, just say Data’s voice box is damaged and have him speak through songs and sound bites. Worked for Bumblebee.

This problem could be avoided by enlisting Spiner to play Jeff Soong, of Clan Soong... seeking to perfect the positronic brain after B-4 exploded in a gardening accident.

Stewart himself said this is 20 years post-Nemesis. Regardless of how he viewed the character then, he's recognized that Picard "today" is a 78 year old man, and won't be John McLane'ing around the galaxy anymore.
Stewart is 78, but Picard will be 94 if it is 20 years after Nemesis.

I was wildly conjecturing that it would be much more Picard-centric than TNG, and less ensemble-style than something like the Twin Peaks revival. But yes, I fully expect a Wheatontastic cameo cavalcade. (I didn't realize Beyer had earned a "motherfucking" for a middle name, those must be some boss Janeway novels.)

They really, really are. Not only are her post-series Voyager novels highly acclaimed and bestselling, they're fan favorites too.

Taking the least loved Trek series (even Enterprise has Manny Coto's Season 4) and making it one of the most beloved novel series is quite the hurdle to climb and one hell of an accomplishment. She did for Voyager what Big Finish's audio plays did for the Sixth Doctor. She deserves all the success she's getting.

EDIT: Everyone over in the BBS's Trek Lit section nicknamed her Kirsten motherfucking Beyer. Or KMFB for short.

Picard will star as the facility director for the Star Fleet Assisted Living Community. A cranky old Klingon will be the recreational coordinator and we'll have several androids milling about to take your orders. Captain Wesley Crusher of the NCC 1701-G will pay them a visit in the first episode.

I'd watch. Maybe Betty White could put in an appearance.

The TNG crew got a proper send off in Nemesis. The crew had one last adventure together, then they all moved on. The story wasn't any less shitty than Star Trek 6 (yes, that movie sucked too), it's just that the general audience didn't care about the TNG crew like they did the original. And that's saying something considering that TNG was a much, much bigger hit in first run. And THAT is the real pisser behind all this "proper send off" noise that we've been hearing for twenty years now. That despite greater popularity in first run, despite breaking records in syndication, despite critical acclaim, general audiences didn't really care about them going away. Both Nemesis and Star Trek 6 were mostly shit with a few good moments in them. Both films had good endings, the only difference being that Star Trek 6 ended with the crew sailing into the sunset and into legend. Kirk and crew were mythical, and we could imagine them sailing the stars forever and having endless adventures.

The TNG crew was never legendary in that kind of way. The TNG crew was the more down to Earth crew, the one that moved on from the Enterprise, that went on to other things and chapters in their lives and more believably so. And the end of Nemesis reflected that. Life went on like life does. One friend died. Others went their own way to be replaced by new crew mates who in time would become old friends to those who stayed behind on the Enterprise. So no, they didn't get their "sailing into the sunset and myth" moment, but they had the more believable ending and it was just fine.

And god I hope this Picard show is just that. Aside from him, Burton and Spiner, I've never been too impressed with the rest of the actors, I liked them enough back in the day, but have zero interest in seeing them now. Based on Stewarts words, this doesn't appear to be a nostalgic reunion show and thank god for that. He said that it would be about Picard in the next chapter of his life and would deal with his experiences leading up to that. He's not still sailing with the Enterprise crew, and those folks are the people he used to work with at a job he had twenty years ago. Between now and then, he's met scads of new people, made new friends, maybe married, who knows. I'm more interested in seeing Picard as a regular person in a more grounded setting. Not on a ship, or station. Not part of Starfleet. Just an elder statesman who maybe does some teaching, or some archaeology, or working on his memoirs, in the later days of his life.

We need fresh new windows into this world, and we've already got a "traditional" Trek for 2018 in DSC. I'm not interested in seeing yet another crew on another spaceship, or a lame ass "fall of the Federation" thing. So hopefully this series or mini-series (whatever it is) will give us a fresh insight into the world of the Federation.

Perhaps most interesting to me about this is that it would be set in 2399 or 2400, at the turn of the 25th century. That could allow for a wonderful story that uses Picard to reflect on both personal and professional darkness, chaos, and conflict and turns to the light of a hopeful, undiscovered tomorrow.

Nah, the Golden age of Star trek is when Shatner and Stewart shared the cover of Time magazine together. That's as big as Trek ever got. This certainly a wonderful new era of Trek goodness, but not quite a "golden age" in comparison.
shame the movie didn't live up to the prestige of being on cover of Time :(

Please CBS don't scr3w this up....
Let it be the "pilot" for 24th/25th century new series, have cameos from all shows.. and keep DSC as what is it (Hawaai 5-0 in space), we won't mind at all!

Agree to disagree about the quality of Star Trek VI. That aside, Star Trek VI was crafted by Nimoy and Nicholas Meyer with the intention of it being the grand finale of TOS. Nemesis was not intended to be Next Gen's finale by either the filmmakers or the cast. The tagline of the movie was "A generation's final journey begins.", which Stewart and the others made abundantly clear while promoting it meant that they were planning to do a least one last film following Nemesis.

CBS isn't interested in any of that.

Well... frankly, as this announcement not only heralds the return of at least one, if not more of our beloved show's characters & cast, but also represents the potential to be the 1st Star Trek product distributed since 2002, that actually has the balls to boldly go forward in when they set the thing, instead of it's long habit of prequeling the IP to death, I might have to give it a shot.

Bearing in mind, the nearly 2 decades of increasing disappointment I've been struggling with, I remain cautiously skeptical, but from the mere presence of Sir Patrick alone, for whom I have a great deal of admiration & respect, I feel the thing at least deserves a chance to be accepted with an open mind.
