TNG Returns!

That's because Stewart has looked like a 70 year old for the past 30 years.

I'm not just talking about aging, I suppose; Stewart has the same physique as he used to, as well, while Frakes looks like he took a page from the Doohan/Shatner playbook.... .:D

Well that's the novels screwed. :)
He'll probably be an Ambassador. I doubt he'll still be captain.
The best news out of this is that with it being a post Nemesis show that we might see some new ships. Maybe even the F or Aventine.
Hopefully they don't mess these ships up like the ones in STD.

I'm excited that TNG is back, but seeing that Kurtzman and Goldsman are the showrunners for this... ugh.
Kirsten Beyer being Trek alumni also didn't stop her from writing absolute crap for Discovery.
Seriously, bring back Piller, along with Coto and Behr for TNG. I have no hope in the Discovery team to do any justice to TNG.

YES!!!!!! It sounds like this will be exactly what I wanted for the series. Picard as he is TODAY, NOW, 20 years since we last saw him. He's not on the Enterprise, he's perhaps no longer in Starfleet. Ambassador? Archeologist? Retired? Who cares!

Omg. This is brilliant news. Hyperventilating at the moment. This is truly the golden age of Star Trek. Wow. Just....... wow.
Nah, the Golden age of Star Trek was when Shatner and Stewart shared the cover of Time magazine together. That's as big as Trek ever got. This is certainly a wonderful new era of Trek goodness to be sure, but not quite a "golden age" in comparison.

My interest is only slightly piqued.

Given the look, tone, and just "feel" of the recent Trek movies/series, I can't say I'm exactly overcome with joy.

In response to various commenters - Stewart is only "too old" to play the part if they fail to take into account his age of 78. Even considering the uneven quality of Discovery, I can't imagine the producers would be daft enough to ignore Stewart's age, in conceiving this series. That said, streaming audiences skew younger, so it will be interesting to see how CBS proceeds with geriatric-themed content. (I'm guessing they won't go the senility route, a la Logan.)

As Serveaux pointed out upthread, it's likely Sir Pat has the final executive say over how this show shapes up, otherwise he probably wouldn't have signed on. So, I doubt it will end up like Discovery.

Stewart's own statement on Twitter indicates that his age will most certainly not be ignored. He'll be Picard 20 years post-Nemesis. It will totally be Logan-esque.

I am in full agreement.
However...maybe...just maybe....
Either way, well, DSC fun knowing you..kinda...but...may as well put the lights out now...xD

Stewart produced Ins and Nem.

...

I really hope he doesn’t produce. It’s documented exactly how that turns out.

Stewart had some degree of script approval on the feature films, but it's rather simplistic to blame him for the way those turned out.

Right, but at a certain point, the cameras have to start rolling, so unless Stewart threatens to quit, a script can only undergo so many revisions... and this series has announced Akiva Goldsman as producer, a major voice in the first season of Disco...

So I'm keeping my expectations terranbound.
