TNG Relaunch: What happened to Madden?

No, it's not okay! Slaughter him!

Errr...that wasn't very moderatorish of me, was it?

Personally I can't understand all the anti-Worf people out there. Sure he started out as a completely one dimensional, pea-brained buffoon, but by the end of DS9 he had become one Star Trek's most nuanced and likeable characters.

Yeah he's still a little uptight, but so what? Not every character has to be the easy-going, cowboy hero. And while some people might have grown incredibly sick of the Klingons, I'm only sick of people who write the Klingons badly. :klingon: (As far as I'm concerned there's only two people who should be allowed to write Klingon stories: Ron Moore and Keith R.A. DeCandido )

Sure Worf's appearance in Nemesis was a little WTF, but thanks to KRAD's deft writing skills (and obvious affection for the guy), along with everyone involved in the A Time To series, he's even more fascinating than ever. IHMO.

I was actually quite miffed when the rumours were circulating that Worf might not be the Enterprise's new first officer in the TNG relaunch.

Just playin' a little devil's advocate, fellas. I'm convinced now, OK? :)
Hey, I can't hold a grudge against someone who has a Groucho quote as his sig.

Personally, I prefer moderatorial.

My usenet/email sig circa 1993 or so was "With a little study you'll go a long ways, and I wish you'd start now." There are so many Marx Bros lines that work well online.

:guffaw: God bless Groucho! There oughta be more like him today...

Oh, and thanks, KRAD. I've got nothing against Worf. I just thought his change of fortune was odd. I think IRL, such a reprimand in his file would have slowed his career down pretty drastically.

Indeed. The startup sound on my laptop is "Ride through every village and town! / Wake every citizen uphill and down! / Tell them the enemy comes from afar, / With a hey-nonny-nonny and a hot-cha-cha!"

At the time of the episode, Worf was a Lt Cmdr, commander of Defiant and sort of third in command of DS9. Now five years later, Worf is still a Lt Cmdr and a temp first officer of Enterprise. I say his career hasn't moved during that time period even though he was one of the people instrumental for the Federation winning the war. IRL, he'll probably get the purple heart, or victoria cross, or equivalent medals, plus a promotion in rank, just for what he did in the war.

to get a purple heart he needs to be WIA and receive surgery for the injuries.

to get a VC he'd need to do something incredibly brave in the face of enemy fire. that's MUCH harder to do as an equivalent to a naval officer on a warship. it's typically given to infantry soldiers.

Worf'd be more likely to recieve the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Medal or an equivalent.

I'm sure this has been discussed before and I apologize for forgetting but what became of the Cmdr Martin Madden character who was to have replaced Will Riker as first officer of the Enterprise?

Who? I never saw that scene. Was it in the movie?

Wasn't that incident put on Worf's permanant Starfleet record? I recall hearing Sisko saying that this would follow him through the rest of his career and make it very difficult for Worf to continue up the command path. I haven't seen that episode in a long time but I do sort of recall Sisko giving Worf that warning. If it is part of his permanant record then it would be up to Starfleet Command to decide later on weather or not to remove it or keep it on Worf's record.

I understand pocket books decision not to include Madden in the relaunch...it WAS a rather gimmicky scene. Not the character's fault though he ended up making an ass out of him self right off the bat!
