TNG on Family Guy

What a complete waste that was. Go to all the trouble to assemble those people to only use them for 5 minutes of screen time? I know the show has devolved to the equivalent of a random pop culture reference generator but I was still expecting better than this crap.

Once again I assembled my friends to see a TNG effort (as I did for Nemesis-Insurrection) and I am rewarded with this stupid half hour? What a waste of time...they all laughed at me at the end; it was that bad.

Oye!!! The humanity of it allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll...

Nobody got assembled, it's voice over's. All you do is record your voice reading your line in the script & send it in. You don't even need to show up at the offical recording studio anymore.

Think about all those people doing podcasting from their basements.

Didn't they draw that pic once of the TNG crew on the enterprise bridge in family guy style? talk about misinformation (since we didn't even get to see the enterprise).

Actually, you're thinking of a completely different episode, one that aired three and a half years ago.

While it is common for voiceover guest stars to record their performances individually at different times (as is common practice on The Simpsons, especially with ensemble guest casts like in the baseball episode), Seth McFarlane did say that they had reunited the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". And I agree it was a wasted opportunity, as none of them were used very creatively or given anything really funny or interesting to do.

If David Goodman wrote the Futurama Star Trek episode and works on Family Guy now, I don't know why he couldn't do theirs too. Maybe if he had we would have seen some clever inside jokes that are funny even if you're not a huge Star Trek fan, as was the case on "Where No Fan Has Gone Before". At least it was cool to hear Marina Sirtis' distinctive accent again, and I kinda liked Michael Dorn being the wuss who has to go to the bathroom all the time after so many years of him playing a tough character.

Huge letdown.

The funniest part was when Michael Dorn made mention of Patrick Stewart hogging the spotlight on TNG.

"Oh f*ck you, Michael.."

Althought I was upset that the cast was relegated to the B plot, it's not the worst thing about the episode. What truly sucked about it was that the jokes had very little, if anything, do to with the cast of TNG. It was total stunt casting. Any group of actors could have been interchanged in there without much of a rewrite and you'd still have the same boring episode.

Crap! I turned it off before that! They NEVER do a tag on that show!
*grumble grumble.*

The joke about Shatner's wife drowning was in extraordinarily poor taste. I disliked Family Guy before seeing this episode, but now my hate is complete.

I pity the producers of everything attached to Star Trek, it's fans are NEVER satisfied...

That could lead to a fine disucssion itself, but in this case, the episode was crap. I know Family Guy fans who aren't into Trek and couldn't give a rat's ass about the TNG gang being there who still thought this episode sucked donkey balls.

I really appreciate the comments from everyone.
This episode is sadly ironic. Stewie gets pissed off at the convention because no one is asking any Star Trek questions. Yet for the rest of the episode when we see the TNG cast, no Trek jokes or referances are made.
Agreed.
It was a letdown overall, but had a few highlights. Peter's question about Shatner killing his wife was just wrong, but hilarious.
It is about time someone said it, even in a poorly executed cartoon. Having dealt with him, I have had doubts.

Too bad they saved the punch line until after most people changed the channel. I couldn't watch the whole thing. Thanks for the clip!

Well stated. It was a crappy episode... and I am a Family Guy fan.

I am glad to see such a lively discussion conducted in a pleasant manner. We need more of these. (I am not saying this just because I started the thread. I thoroughly enjoyed it!) THANKS EVERYONE!! :techman::techman::techman::techman::techman:

Yeah, I don't think it's fair to say that Star Trek fans are NEVER satisfied. Sure, we are a picky lot, but when quality work is done with the franchise and its actors, in most cases you can count on the majority of the fans to recognize and appreciate that.

Just to give an example close to the episode in question, how many Star Trek fans complained about the Futurama episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before"? Not a lot I bet, and I'm sure that if it had airred for the first time recently instead of that Family Guy episode and this thread was about it, you'd be looking at a much more positive thread. That episode did everything right that this episode did wrong. Spreading the parts across the cast generously and giving them visual and dialogue gags that are funny, original, and chock full of cute and witty references to Star Trek lore and fandom.

IMO, that was the problem. I tuned in expecting to see an awesome episode like Where No Fan Has Gone Before and was very disappointed.
If people do want to rewatch this it will air on Adult Swim on Monday at 11:00.
Thanks! I'll watch it tonight and TRY to keep an open mind, but no promises...:cardie:

I still think the point is that it's not _supposed_ to be a Valentine's Day episode like the Futurama one, it's supposed to be ironic humor wherein the cast of TNG shows up and acts like normal schlubs.

Well I've yet to see the fans of any other show complain as much, in fairness....

I thought the episode was pretty funny, it made me come back to family guy where I was turned off it a bit before and was gonna stop watching.

I hear you comparing it to the Star Wars one, maybe I'm biased because I never really liked star wars but I tried watching the star wars one and was dying of boredom after 5 minutes.

I'm not getting what everyone thinks was so crap about it? As for the lack of trek refrences I thought Tasha getting splattered "as a warning" was a pretty good reference!

Which is how they acted on set (which was Stewie's question). In one of the behind the scenes books they talk about how much they picked and tormented each other when the cameras were off (except Patrick Stewart did it every so often to Michael Dorn by making faces when the focus was on him).

Finally watched the ep. It was utter CRAPPPPP! After watching it, I felt FG needs to be cancelled again!
