Spoilers TNG, DS9, and VOY - Where is a Good Place to Start?

I am about 30% done with Rising Son. I think what I am enjoying most about it is the Gamma Quadrant story of how the Alpha Quardrant is percived. I am hopeful more of that type of perspective is in the rest of the book. Also the species on the Evan Odds are very interesting.

I've decided I'm going to start over with Rising Son. I got to chapter 6, but I've been going long strings of just not really wanting to get back into it, and that is kind of worrisome. Things were getting interesting, but I'm feeling with this book the same I felt with Mission Gamma: Book 2, it's not really gripping enough. I mean we went from the end of Book 4 and the area of space changing and Jake and Opaka on Wayoun's ship back to right after Avatar and things were going kind of slow. Same thing happened with Lesser Evil, we meet a new alien race and it feels like a come down from the excitement of Twilight and Prynn and Vaughn finally starting to heal old wounds (Something that was touched upon quite well in Book 4).

I decided to restart Rising Son though because I have to remember who wrote this book, the same author who wrote the incredible Avatar, SD Perry. I am giving the book the benefit of the doubt, but I need to get back into that mood to "not put the book down" again, like what happened with Mission Gamma 4. Also, I do plan to get Unity for Christmas (Or after) so that's motivation right there.

I have heard Rising Son is a great book and I hope it is. Right now though, it's taking a while to see it.

Rising Son is a very good book, but, like you, I had the same problem getting engaged with the story initially.

I think it's due to the different structure of this book as opposed to the previous Mission Gamma titles and even the novels that preceded MG in the relaunch. All of the DS9 relaunch books until Rising Son seemed to share a mixed focus on characters and settings. The books shift from Alpha to Gamma quadrant, DS9 to Defiant, Kira to Vaughn, etc. The variety of different characters and stories helped keep things interesting as the authors juggled our attention to various points in the galaxy.

But with Rising Son, aside from a few scenes, the reader is with Jake and the Even Odds for the entire novel. Ultimately it rewards that committed focus with a pretty entertaining story but, after being immersed in Mission Gamma, it requires the reader to adjust their expectations a bit.

I absolutely loved every page of Rising Son, and I'm kind of shocked to hear somebody with such a different opinion.

I didn't say I didn't like it I just said so far it's not really that gripping so far, even though the book is interesting. It's just when I go long periods without reading it, yeah I need to start over.

I am at 54% with Rising Son, they have arrived at the Ice Planet. I thought the part about New Bajor was very good. Also the Gateways part was good too... nice tie in. I keep waiting for something big to happen though, it feels like something big (and bad) is looming.

Please be careful with spoilers. :)

Okay, so I finished it. It ended so...well...weirdly. I mean we know how it end before it starts, but I kept expecting something else to happen and when it did, I was like... well... ok.

Overall this story feels like it is building to something, which frankly the last novel did as well. So my thought is...when the pay off? :)

So in my opinion this book is a great coming of age type story about Jake. The author writes Wayoun so well too. The novel had some great references to epsoides from the series as well. So yeah I am giving this one a solid B.

Next up.... Unity.

Hopefully the Even Odds shows up in later novels :)

Don't worry, you'll get a payoff in Unity, but Rising Son was needed to help wrap-up the missing Jake storyline that was started in Avatar, as Jake plays a role in the next couple of books.

Unity is a pretty big payoff for all of the DS9 Relaunch up to that point.

Well I get paid on Monday, guess I will be hitting the download button for my Kindle after work and get Unity. :)

We finally got to Cathedral on Literary Treks. I think this may be my favorite in the Mission Gamma series so far on my reread of it.

:techman:Excellent Podcast. Cathedral and Rising son are my favorite novels from the Mission Gamma books.

Well I finished Unity.
Mind. Is. Blown.
A+
Like someone else said. It is the payoff AND does feel like a season finale. I do hope we learn more about the hatred the parasite(s) have. Just seems like so many avenues of a story could be there. Anyway, hands down an awesome novel. Every bit as good as Avatar parts 1 and 2.

If you want to find out more about the Parasites, read the Audrid Dax story in "The Lives Of Dax", and the Trill portion of the World's Of DS9 novels will deal with the fall out from Unity story.
