Contest: ENTER TNG Caption This! #516: Still a Miracle Worker

wDKD6by.jpg

SCOTTY: I don't mean to be critical, but there's something off about this holo bridge.
PICARD: Not sure what you mean, I have it on good authority this is what a 23rd Century Bridge looks like.
Hah, awesome. Looks like a real BTS shot!!

RIKER: "We're now at maximum impulse speed Captain, we'll be through this gaseous anomaly in no time"

PICARD: "Excellent, now after we ... um ... er ... Number One, what is a mountain goat doing up in this gaseous anomaly?"

Scotty: Och, laddie! Ye've got to switch the voltage from 220 to 110!

TNGCaption337e.jpg

Picard: We're happy you came. Please never do it again.

Picard: This is the wrong channel Mister Data.

TREK_GOAT.jpg

Picard: Nope. Keep going.

TNGCaption337c.jpg

Picard: That's it. Sacré merde!

Geordi: Damn it, the transporter is using the wrong shimmer for the Movie era!

Riker: Abort! Abort!

TNGCaption337b.jpg

Picard: OK, you've got me, I'm not really French. But keep it a secret and I won't tell anyone you're clearly not Scottish.

Scotty: Och laddie, I'll drink to that!

TNGCaption337c.jpg

Picard: Boy do Dysons suck.

TNGCaption337d.jpg

Scotty: Now I remember why I retired!

TNGCaption337e.jpg

Scotty: Why was the other pretty woman hiding till now?

Jedman67, is there some trick to it? Because I looked at the Photobucket announcement to their policy change... and it looks to me like they want $399.99 a year to enable 3rd party hosting! I can't imagine many people would go from free to $399.99 per year...

TNGCaption337b.jpg

Scotty: "Captain, I want something that'll get me inebriated. This looks like some kind of 24th century health drink."
Picard: "It's the best of both worlds -- nutrition with a kick!"

TNGCaption337c.jpg

Riker: "Pushing the clouds away,
to reveal a sunny day."
Picard: "Leave poetry to the poets, Number One."

TNGCaption337d.jpg

Geordi: "Scotty, maybe you can explain something to me. Why on Earth do these starship panels have a tendency to explode? Just doesn't make sense to me."
Scotty: "Things would be too boring if they didn't, lad."

TNGCaption337e.jpg

Scotty: "Captain, a free shuttle? I can't thank you enough!"
Picard: "Free? I never said free. It's coming out of your pension."
Scotty: "They brought back money in this century?"

Yep, that's all I can find, too. From their new Terms of Service:
o Plus 50 Plan: 52 GB of Storage for $59.99 / Year. The Plus 50 Plan does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting.

o Plus 100 Plan: 102 GB of Storage for $99.99 / Year. The Plus 100 Plan allows for unlimited image linking but does not allow 3rd party image hosting.

o Plus 500 Plan: 500 GB of Storage and unlimited bandwidth for $399.99 / Year. The Plus 500 Plan allows for unlimited image linking and unlimited 3rd party image hosting.

LOL! They know there are other free image hosts available, right?

Now what they seem to have done is employ the "Pelt Them With Contempt" school of marketing. Constant popup spam, annoying ad layouts and overlaps, redirects, and of course, the "holding your members' data hostage" approach, à la Facebook. It was bad enough when they started resizing old images into thumbnails! And their interface javascript got really laggy and buggy from overseas. Whose running that place now, a chimp brigade?

So what this means now is that a lot of older caption contest threads are going to have their images replaced with a lovely Photobucket spam ad. Wow, way to win customer loyalty!

So, pay Photobucket $400 a year for image hosting on a site that is willing to revise its entire business model at some point with your data held hostage - or google "free image host". That's a toughie!

Photobucket just jumped the shark with that Web 1.0 crap. I'm trying Post Image out for the time being, they seem to have stepped up their game.

Picard: I can't believe I'm sitting here.
Scotty: I know, that's the the best seat in the house for checking out Uhura.

Helmsman: "Commander Riker, do you really need to crouch over me? This stance of yours is giving me the creeps!"
Riker: "Funny, Data never complained about it."
Data: "She's right, Commander Riker. It is a bit... creepy."

Photobucket used to be great. Gradually they overloaded it with useless features. Their "story board" was not intuitive, and rather clunky. Some of the edit stuff is OK, but not needed. Then the ads came. I'll never forget stepping into Photobucket to do some uploading and waiting... waiting... waiting for things to materialize. Ad scripting gone awry. Forget about having 2 tabs on the site. Need an ad blocker to use it. I've got a Ghostery plug-in. Even with that, it's still overloaded. I don't put up new images, but periodically browse for existing to get the links. Now? Well... it's done.

Post Image is good. They lack the multi-level directory structure of Photobucket, which is annoying. So it's all at top level. But their interface is very quick and they've got a very convenient way to give you a variety of links for your images (thumbnails, embeds, direct links, etc). The only trouble with their thumbnails is that it doesn't bring up the image alone... it takes you to their site, where the viewer ends up seeing ads. And some of them are in the slutty arena. You can edit the generated thumbnail links to bring up direct images. For a while it stopped working but it seems to be OK again.

I don't know how long Post Image will last. They were having some trouble last year and they had a notice begging for donations and that they may have to shut down. Well, they're still here. I've enabled some ads to show so that they get some financial credit for that.

Scotty: These Photobucket ads have got even worse in the last century. My computer just exploded!
Geordi: Then stop using it!
Scotty: Lad, I'm Scottish. It would be unethical for me not to use something that's free.
