tng blueprinting WIP

another short update, i'm still at it for today, but i wanted to show just how things are starting to deviate from the TNG deck plans based on what is actually represented on the model.

minor changes are the lateral placement of deck 4 windows and escape pod hatches, and radial spacing of the deflector grid has been more evenly spaced. i also changed my escape pod hatches in general, the stickers used on the model are a bit pie-wedge shaped: narrower at the top than the bottom. but i have made mine squared off (i just like them better that way).

but then once i began to actually place all the individual windows and hatches you see how fast things change.

some elements from the model dont even appear on the plans, and sometimes there are even too many windows on the plans.

anyway here's a peek, 2nd image is the same view, just re-colored so you can actually see with the deck plans in the background

i have a few windows to finish on the saucer rim, and hope to finish the aztecing today too (i'm trying to limit the actec to 3 application layers, its literally a puzzle to get it together right once the general pattern is established)

i wanted to post a couple pdf's yesterday since all the grafics run together when you're zoomed out far enough for any kind of overall view.

I'm having trouble with my pdf printer. i havnt used it in a couple years (since i upgraded acrobat versions) and the new version doesnt seem to want to create vector pdf's...:brickwall: just keeps making chunky pdf-style bitmaps...

as soon as i get that sorted out i'll post a bunch of goodies!
untill then here's a couple of screenshots

windows are just place holders at the moment, finished version you'll actually be able to see the hull profile through them like so:

does anyone know where to start, and in what order to go, to number the lifeboat hatches??? there are only a handfull of numbers used on the actual model, but i want to number mine all sequentially.

Well you never really get rid of the cartoony look until you get the right textures, bump maps and lighting in a decent 3D program.

What I'm doing in Illustrator with my starship design doesn't look all that complex, and isn't all that realistic yet, but one step at a time for me. Looking good though, keep it up.

I forgot to post this yesterday, on my "to-do" list for this is deciding on a solution for another model-reality dilemna

the lifeboat hatches on the butt-end of the saucer just wont work, there's only about 6 feet from the surface of the hatches town to the upper hull of the engineering section...

somewhere along the way the powers that be noticed this too, and the official plans have changed these from lifeboat hatches to "equipment access hatches" (noted as such on the Whitefire plans, but not the Sternbach counterpart)

the model as is

i'm also stuck on the main hangar, in order for the door to acuall open it MUST open "downward" its clearly one piece across from the left to right sides, but because the way the roof angles inward as it continues forward, there's no place for it to slide to if it were to open "up" as shown. :brickwall:

as i mentioned i may end up making it open down, rolling under the hangar floor itself, or else i will have to split it in to sections (probably3) to allow for room to collapse some of that width. any suggestions?

edit: the hangar pic didnt make it... obviously the red is where the overhang would occur.

finished nailing down the "cobra head" geometry today... its a PITA finding good pictures of that model split apart, so i ended up basing most of it on a Probert's concept sketch, and this cutaway poster

anyway, here's how its looking at the moment

Wow your WIP is so amazing  :) :techman:

btw you have or know somebody that has a extra copy of that or any of the other cutaway posters they made?

I lost all of mine when my father got locked up :(

while fighting the insomnia monster i did a little more on this last nite, or maybe this morning??? :guffaw:

i pleasantly surprised myself however, i was cutting in the windows on the neck. i began using the airlock as a starting point to measure from and worked out and up from there.

but i had forgotten that on just a whim yesterday i reduced the deck height a bit on the neck section, and about 1/2 way through locating all the windows i discovered that if i had not done so i would have been an entire row of windows short! everything fit perfectly the first time around, YAY! :bolian:

i'm not even going to try to draw out the front profile of all those windows with the goofy curvature of that neck, it would take forever. i will just build it up in 3d and carve them out all at once to drop on the front & bottom profiles.

i wish i did, the only one i have is of the tmp refit. i only found pics of that one in someone's flicker stream using a google search...

lots of info for finding them here though

thank you very much for that info :) :techman:

found my old-old-old copy of acrobat, so i installed the pdf writer from it, and i'm still having trouble with blocks not rendering correctly :brickwall:. but the GOOD news is i can post better pics now thanks to the .pdfs, some of the colors have washed out, mainly the finished aztec stuff.
i "put the ship back together" rather hastily, but this is still a good peek at the overall progress :techman:

another quickie post.

I found another error today in the schematics as i was cutting in x-sections to get the deck footprints for the neck.

the widest point of the base of the neck was about 50 feet too wide in the schematics.

as i was cutting c-secs i was getting these huge bulges toward the back side that just didnt make sense when i was comparing them to the model!

Thank you for the kind words guys!

just watched both AGT and Generations yesterday. definately doing the Nebula and uber-prise variants at some point too!

Awesome news. :) As I said in my email... if you need ANY help with the Nebula, just let me know. :)
