I think that they were being microwaved during the transporter accident. So whatever that looks like: Burning, Melting, and then Imploding. 
Come to think of it now I wonder if Kirk sabotaged the transporter on purpose, in an attempt to reunite his old crew. He goes out of his way to basically steal The Enterprise, but I really hope he wouldn't kill two people.
