You're thinking of the background performers' jumpsuits. The main cast's uniforms were clearly quite different in TWOK.

For the enlisted uniforms, yes.

My bad. I read about the uniforms being dyed red. Didn't know they meant the enlisted uniforms.

The enlisted uniforms in TWOK were redyed, redetailed versions of much of the TMP wardrobe.

The producers asked Fletcher to see what colors the steel-grey and tan outfits would take. He came up with a blue, a gold, and a rust-red. They went with the red.

The implication there, BTW, is that the color of the whole wardrobe - the officers uniforms included - was based on the economies to be derived from the extras' outfits.

This is the most concise answer and explains it all clearly.

Agree, the JJ Trek '09 made the updated TOS uniforms look as good as ever.

I mostly agree, though made no sense at all for all of Starfleet to be using the Enterprise emblem (or that they would be used on the Kelvin). Or more likely Abrams was completely ignorant of the TOS idea of individual ship patches?

Speaking of which, the Kelvin uniforms weren't too bad, either.
