TMP/TNG Theme

Someone used to tell me it sounded like the theme to a Viking movie! But I loved the Klingon theme as per when the three ships engage V'Ger in the opening!

That piece IS Star Trek to my generation, when you say Star Trek to my generation that's the music they think of. I say generation without meaning to be funny.

Respectfully, I actually think it crosses several generations of fans who identify with it as the "primary" Star Trek theme. It appeared in 1979, almost 40 years ago. It was present in 2 TOS films, and 3/4 of the TNG films, as well as 7 seasons of TNG. Pretty hard to deny all that from the collective consciousness!

And while we're considering alternative themes, it's worth remembering McCarthy's original take for TNG was this. The decision to re-use Goldsmith instead was a wise one. ;)

First time I ever heard that.

Honestly, I like it, and it seems to fit the tone of the show. If they had used it it, it would have given TNG more of it’s own thing theme wise (as in, when I hear the Goldsmith theme I think “TMP” not “TNG”).

The thing about the alternative TNG theme is that after I learned it exists, I started noticing how often variations of it pop up on the music scores as a 'hero motif' on those early episodes. Makes me wonder if the switcheroo to the TMP theme was a very late change...
