TMP Drydock

At NASA they don't tacke chances - they double up on everything!

Except in certain disaster movies

well, i try not to knock them too hard. they get it right sometimes! just look at the mars rovers for example. one's a gimp, and the other's downright nearly crippled, but they're still at it, 6-month survivability has now gone on how many years??? lol

small update, Search4 took a ruler to the model for me :) so i finished getting everything sized out correctly, and detailed the paneling along the sides of the storage complex's

i have nothing new on the 3d yet, and i'm still working on the greebles for the lower surface, probably wont be anything new to post untill i get into detailing the 3d model.

i have other things to work on... but i couldnt resist getting the sides worked out this afternoon since it's all such primary geometry :rommie:

i did a few test renders to test out the lighting rig, still havnt found the right touch yet...

maybe i'll put my Lego-E into it tomorrow when i get time to figure it out.

Carefully, those boxes you made are not light boxes, they do not emit light. The light is coming from the numerous spots on the dock, and the rig they used outside the dock.

Are you talking about the blue... things that do something boxes? Those were most certainly lit internally.

Yes, ofcourse lit internally, but they did not cast light on the ship. The light they cast was to weak.

i am being carefull not to make the screens themselves too bright, i've simply made the material self-illuminating and placed scene lights just above their surface. but when its done and i put my E in it, i want to do the illumination using the Docks lights only.

this is all the light the actual boxes cast (and this is turned up to maximum)

When you see the pictures of them setting up the scene for real, using all those spots and mirrors and so forth, you wonder why we spend so long trying to get the lighting lifelike in CGI. They cheated! Go cheat a bit, safe in the knowledge that it's a trade secret.

yea, i especially like the bit in the TMP bonus disc where they showed a glimpse of the "dental rig" with all the little mirrors there.

i guess to satisfy mass-appeal i'll have to do 2 separate lighting setups, i really want to do one of my own using the light screens. i just want to see the model with all the overlaping shadows and illuminations.

"if only there were a print-screen button on the side of my head..."

in the meantime i've done a few more test-renders and as promised i put in my Legoprise

first here's a powered-down shot with just some sunlight to show the whole scene.

and here's some with just the light-screens on, there are still the spotlight-gun things to model on the lower frames, and the big octagon light array thing to be modeled, which should even up the coverage. but here's how it is now.

in the end once i have my regular E in there i'll probably do a little better aiming of the lights on the corner frames. as it is now the light is aimed just as the boxes are at 45°'s and all 3 outer edge lights end up focusing on the same region in the center of mass.

i'll start working on modeling the rest of those bits, and the kitbash greebles later in the week. i still have more i want to get done on my x-wing first however.

i ended up working on this more today after all :rommie:

i put in my unfinished Refit too, the un-optimized acad mesh nearly crippled my dual-core system when i tried rendering.......... these 2nd shot here with the sunlight effect turned on took about 90 minutes to render:( i guess i'll have to get around to re-working it!

anyway here's another dock-only setup, and the 2nd as mentioned has environmental setup turned on too
