TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

I forgot, the 2013 blu-ray does show "not rated" on the back for the theatrical cut.

Interesting. I think in the UK all films need to be rated for sale. The only exempt categories are educational material, and most sport and music.

Working my way through the bonus disc, and one of the new featurettes has some glitches on my copy. Anybody else seeing this? It's the one with the costume test shots.

It stops, breaks up, and skips ahead.

It's only this one featurette.

No, my copy seems fine, no glitches. It might be a smudge or debris on your disc. Do you have any CD/DVD/BR cleaning clothes? Dry ones, apparently Blu-Rays have a coating that doesn't react well with cleaning products.

I'll give it a try. Thanks!

The big difference is that in the UK, the age certification/rating system is a government-managed thing, and legally enforceable when it comes to ticket and home media sales.

In the US the MPA (formerly MPAA) ratings system is managed/sponsored entirely by the industry itself, and submitting a film for age rating is ostensibly "voluntary." But the movie distribution system was run in such a way that unrated movies had little, if any chance of playing in the big box cinemas. The big cinema studios were MPAA members and agreed to have ratings on all movies intended for theatrical release. And the theaters would typically only exhibit films received through the distribution system of the big studios, and would enforce the age ratings by company policy even though they weren't legally binding. The same with stores selling home video tapes/discs/etc. to customers.

All this is in line with Herbert Hoover's idea of the "associative state," with industries basically regulating themselves so that close government involvement can be minimized. Or something like that. I went over this stuff in college, but it's been a while.

Anyway, I digress.

I finally watched the DE last night and I was utterly blown away! It’s just stunning. I remember first watching TMP on video back in the early 90’s when I discovered TNG, and I was less than impressed. Over the years, though, it’s come to be my favourite Trek film. Of them all, it just feels like the purest distillation of what Trek is. The DE modifications are superb and really enhance the viewing experience. The film looks and sounds phenomenal and watching it is just a sheer delight. I love it and am so grateful they went back to do this.

I splashed out on the special TMP boxes. It's not bad, but the booklet included is a missed opportunity. It should have been longer and had some text information. The box art is merely serviceable and its a shame they didn't stick with either the Bob Peak artwork or some concept art.

Onto the DE on 4K....
The new sparkly titles are just bad. The opening with the Klingons is still soft and the matte lines are as bad as ever. Loads of scenes with dodgy glitchy travelling matte’s or visibly shaking models are still in place.

There are some great shots, and I rather like the reveal of V'ger even if it does look a little out of place and calls attentionto itself. The most noticeable improvement is the audio, it's much clearer and sounds great.

Some of the CG is still poor, especially the water in the SF scenes.

I watched the new extras and I was gripped throughout. Very enjoyable.

I haven't watched the special TV cut yet, but can only recommend this box set if you want to see this. The boxes should have been metal and featured better artwork. Cardboard sleeves are always a bother. I do love the use of the cutaway enterprise inside though.

You know, considering TWOK was made just a few years later, it's amazing how much better the print is. Much less soft and with punchier colours, pacing and F/X work. TWOK's cinematography really has aged well. TMPs use of the split diopter is fascinating, but perhaps over used here. Tonally very different films, I love them both.

Anyway, that's my two cents...

No it doesn't. That's silly.
I known for my silly opinions.

And I'll still stand by my opinion. Also, not saying rating the whole movie R. Just that one scene. Same with TWOK and the damn Ceti Eels. Never understood the appeal of it.

Lots of movies have creepy/unsettling sound effects, and that's the only thing that really makes that scene horrifying at all. I know lots of people who'd not blink at that sound but Catwoman's claws on glass in Batman Returns makes them crazy.

Welp, looks like Amazon or USPS managed to destroy my shipment this morning, and then the copy I ordered from Amazon UK is shipping to the US via Australia Post for some weird reason... so, I'm trying to reorder it through another seller, so we'll see if that works this time. Seems like something is conspiring against me ever getting a copy of the boxset.

I’ve seen a LOT of chatter about glitchy disks. Man, mine shows up from Amazon next week….I hope I don’t have an issue. I’ve been excited about this for a long time.

I'm not having an issue with playing but with sound. I can't get the Dolby Atmos to play... and it's been a very frustrating evening on both the TV settings and the Ultra HD blu-ray I bought. I've given up for now.

We all have our thing.

Never seen the other thing so can't comment.

If discs commonly have the same problems, maybe they'll have to do a wide-scale replacement thing like they did with the TWOK DE a few years back.
