Tips for Memorization?

That'll take care of the Book of Psalms, for sure--they ARE music. MC, if you don't have one already, perhaps your church's choir director could point you to some musical settings of the Psalms?

If you believe in something strongly enough, memory comes naturally. Usually we remember certain phrases which are powerful and meaningful. Phrases like "we find these truths to be self-evident" or Reagan's "there is no argument over the choice between war and peace" are easy to remember because they stand out as verbal monuments. Likewise in the Bible.
If you really want to memorize a passage of something though, I recommend putting it to music. Pick a tune you know well and like to hum or sing to yourself. Start using your memory work as lyrics while you drive down the road. Remember, music is the other thing that we never forget. You can use that as a tool for advantage.

This is true. I pretty much know Jesus Christ, Superstar by hear.
We used to do something similar in German, but we started at the end and worked backwards.
Your damn skippy I'll PM any comments and I'll address it here as well. And what exactly is trollsome about this? I said to memorize just a few key passages and to try to memorize the whole thing is fruitless. 2 jokes were sprinkled throughout because that's just what I do and you want to stifle me?

I often need to memorize large chunks of text on pretty short notice. What I find works best for me is good old-fashioned repetition, *out loud.* This allows you to not only imprint the material mentally through reading, as well as aurally through hearing, but provides you with the muscle memory of lip movements as well, which I find to be a huge benefit.
Also, never underestimate the power of sleep. When I need to memorize a page or two on short notice, I read over them 50-100 times before going to bed. When I wake up in the morning, more often than not, I find that the text has settled very comfortably into my brain overnight. There's a reason teachers recommend lots of sleep before a test, rather than an all-nighter -- this is it.

Very true about muscle memory. I got to the point sometimes, when delivering speeches for school that I'd have words coming out of my mouth and I'd be daydreaming on some other subject completely because it had become a physical task, not a mind expressing a thought.
But in this case, I really doubt that's the intention. A more meditative approach would probably be in order, to suit Michael Chris' purpose in memorization. Something very rich to the senses (at least in the mind's eye), something very immersive makes more sense.

I'd pay real money if this was TNZ and I wasn't muzzled and could tell you what I really thought of the post. I'll have to settle with the semi-polite version.
What you posted was to Christians like me, insulting, condescending, and inappropriate. To those of us who are Christian, the Bible is more than a weapon with which to attack those who think differently or have a different religion or no one. Some of us enjoy Bible passages (minus the icky stuff, of course, at least in my case,) and are not seeking to use it against non-believers and/or gays (some gays are Christians, in case you didn't realize that.)
Christians come in all stripes. Some are nice like Michael Chris, some are mouthy bitches like me. We don't all think alike, we don't all act alike and some of us, like me, don't take Christian-bashing well.
Your comment was trolling. Plain and simple. It was religion bashing and guess what, bigotry and prejudice, even dressed up and called "a joke" ain't fucking funny.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
