Tim Russ

I didn't like Vorik as a Vulcan because he was too sociable and nice, and he didn't stack up against Tuvok. He was alright as a character though, and I wouldn't have minded them using him a bit more.

Well Vulcans, despite being driven by logic, do have personalities. For me, it was nice to see a Vulcan that did prefer to socialize and participate willingly in things like Neelix's luau.

I dunno Vorik just seemed pretty Bland, even by vulcan standards

That's interesting because I thought he was quite lively by Vulcan standards. Tuvok is alright, but he's so standard issue Vulcan. *yawn*

I actually love to hate Captain Solok from DS9. Adult Vulcan uber bully.

I always found Vorik as a Vulcan child of the 24th century. For all we know, he isn't unusual for Vulcans born in the 2340's.

The funny thing is, I would have loved to see Tuvok do something like that because he's already established as a typical Vulcan, so every little deviation was a big deal, which is what made Tuvok such a great character. He would have a lot of subtle deviations from the norm and still justify them completely with logic. He was a character of subtlety, especially in his dry wit. But because Vorik was always friendly from the start, it didn't mean anything to me. Does that make sense?
Sort of like how every Vulcan in ENT was just crying and screaming all the time. It just established them worse Vulcans, instead of making them interesting or giving them personality. Vorik was nowhere near that bad of course, but for the same reason I didn't find him an interesting Vulcan.

Oh I definitely understand what you're saying and I do appreciate why you feel the way you do. I guess for me I appreciate Vorik because he is different.

A Gen Y Vulcan?

Yes, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and all...

I love Vorik in that Hawaiian shirt. I can't even help myself.

I find it difficult to put into word what it is I like about Vorik; but I do find him to be Vulcan, but without some of the hangups a lot of other Vulcans have. Like Spock and Tuvok wouldn't be caught dead wearing Hawaiian shirts (Spock maybe, but extremely grudgingly and only in unusual circumstances). Vorik appeared to do it to get into the spirit of things. I like that about him. I don't think it cost him his Vulcanness to do that. I think it's just part of his personality to want to participate in social gatherings.
