My mom (for one example) follows golf religiously if Tiger's playing, but the second he's out for injuries or because of something like this, she bails instantly. A lot of other people (sorry to generalize, but mostly moms/housewives in my experience) feel the same.
She's been disappointed in Tiger's behavior but didn't say much, but the moment I told her over the phone that Tiger would be dropping out of golf indefinitely she loudly said "Oh nooo, really!?" That was the greatest tragedy in this whole mess.
