I would hazard to guess he was backing out of his driveway, misjudged where the end of his driveway and the street was and cut the corner too close and hit the hydrant and tree.
Obviously he was doing this at a good clip to cause injuries to himself and I do not believe the airbags go off when the rear of the car is hit.

Interesting. He was leaving his house at 2:25am. Maybe he had a fight with his wife and was upset. Or maybe he was trying to avoid an animal. In any case, I'm glad he's okay.

The Associated Press is quoting Cadillac Escalade specifications, and says that airbags do not deploy in any collision under 33 miles per hour.

That's not true. I had a wreck at about 25 MPH and the airbag did not deploy for me or the other driver.
I would imagine that someone as wealthy as Tiger Woods probably has a rather long driveway. I could be wrong, but that was my first thought when trying to reconcile "serious injuries" with "pulling out of the driveway."

Not really necessary unless there is allegation of fault - when one car is involved, fault is kind of hard to deny.

I read in one report somewhere that there was a spot on the roadwith cones around it...he may have swerved to avoid that and messed up there.
