"Threshold": WHAT THE HELL?????

During the mid to late 90's, my life prohibited me from watching a ton of shows in their original run. I did see some VOY episodes, but never Threshold. According to this and other fansites, it is possibly the worst VOY episode. Possibly the worst episode of Star Trek. I seem to recall posters recoiling in horror when Braga's alien invasion show was named Threshold. So, missing out on it during its original run, I decided for myself to see what it was about and watch it.

Well, I have to say it is not the worst episode of VOY or the worst episode of Trek. But I believe Threshold is the single worst hour of scripted fiction of the last 10 years, if not further back. My goodness. What the hell were they thinking??? Did Braga make a bet that he could make an episode that mangles evolution and physics to an unrecognizable mess and bring to air? And where was Mr. Science Consultant Andre Bore-My-Ass or whatever his name was? Did he even have a high schooler's grasp of biology or physics? And the technobabble, which is usually bad, was taken to new depths. I mean, "sub space torque"? "Multi spectral sub space engine design?" Was there even a way for the foriegn markets to translate that?? No wonder the terrorists hate us!

And the idea of going at infinite speed and end up at every point in the universe only to return to where you started kinda renders the idea of "crossing the threshold" irrelevant.

And how they pissed all over evolution makes my head spin. Was Braga an Intelligent Design proponent and this was his response to people who accept evolution? That moving at infinite speed and ending up at every point of the universe will make humans evolve into catfish salamanders? How does one fathom ideas like this.

I can't see anyone with a working brain can defend this episode. It's not "so bad it's good" bad. It's plain bad. Piss poor. And anyone who has the capacity to even try to defend this dreck, I have to thank you. It's your defense of shitty Trek projects like this which led to Abrams wonderful Trek movie. And that's the only silver lining I can find from a cloud this gray and miserable.

Janeway and Paris have a secret other family in the Delta Quadrant! Best episode ever.

Evolution has a LOT to do with environmental factors, right? Paris and Janeway's hyper-evolution was caused while experiencing some pretty bizarre enviornmental factors (to say the least!), so their evolitionary path wouldn't apply to anyone who hadn't been at infinite super-duper transwarp.

I pretty much agree with you, except that I don't think there was any kind of agenda in the episode except to be really, really, really dumb.

And I wouldn't give André Bormanis too much pain: as a Science Consultant, he had little power to exercise, except for voicing his concerns and hoping the writers would listen to him. Short of setting the script on fire, I guess he did what he could.

it might be bad, but its certainly watchable (especially if you've had a few bloody maries)

I was nodding along until this part. :guffaw: Just another veiled excuse to whine about ST 2009.

And, yes, it is "so bad it's good." At the very least, it's "so bad it's funny as hell, particularly after a few drinks." Take a few deep breaths, and find your happy place. :)

EDIT: Didn't we just have a "Threshold" thread? I thought that's where we were singing the Spider-Barclay song.

You are making a good point. Many people make the mistake of thinking that an evolutionary shift is always going to be towards what most folks would think of as a "more advanced form", when the evolution is actually going to be towards a form that is more suited to the environment (whether that environment stays constant or is a "new" or changing environment). I hadn't really thought about this concept as it relates to this episode, but I think you are right when you say that the direction of the evolution must have been pretty twisted, considering the weird environmental flux of what these two went through.... assuming, that is, that we accept the writer's idea that a single organism (rather than a line of descendants) can somehow evolve under these unusual and extreme conditions.

This episode still makes my head hurt, though....

But it aired 15 years ago.

TATV is the single worst hour of scripted fiction of the last decade, if you ask me.

^Hell, Riker was one of the few that at least made SOME kind of sense in Genesis. Spot turned into a LIZARD for some reason...? :wtf:

And both were written by Brannon Braga. Crazy, huh? It really baffles me no one pulled him aside and told him, "Look, Brannon, you have no idea what evolution is. Go to the library and come back when you understand it."

And if you ask me, Profit and Lace beats out all other contenders for "worst episode of Trek". At least in Threshold, you IMMEDIATELY know it's going to be really damned stupid; like within the first 5 minutes. Profit and Lace builds up an interesting idea with a Ferengi social revolution and THEN delves into the painful, painful idiocy.

Having just finished season 4 of TNG, notice that Braga wrote Identity Crisis - the blue Geordi episode - which had a sort-of evolve/devolve/mutate storyline, and definitely reminded me of Threshold

Are we sensing a pattern here?

I AGREE.

And Threshold isn't bad in the first 5 minutes, there's no sign of what is to come. It's just a Tom-->fast ship story. It's like someone wrote one story and completed 3/4 of it and then handed it to Guy Gardener and said finish this in 5 minutes.

We did...this one should create the "Threshold drinking game..."

I didn't read the entire OP, but whatever it says I'm sure it's spot on.

As a fan of cheese, I found the episode amusingly terrible.

If you're a fan of cheese I recommend learning curve, where cheese not only stars it is

enemy of the week!!!

Threshold is pretty damn bad. However, it certainly isn't the worst episode of Trek ever. That honor belongs to TATV.

I wouldn't even say it's the worst episode of VOY. At the absolute, very least, I can honestly say that Threshold held my attention. It is true that my attention was held by me saying to myself "HOW THE HELL CAN THEY BE THIS F:scream::scream::scream:ING STUPID!" But still, my attention was held.

The Fight is my choice for the worst episode of VOY. It literally put me to sleep (twice); I was so uninterested in it.

Was Braga an Intelligent Design proponent and this was his response to people who accept evolution?

Ummm, no. Braga is an admitted atheist.

Indeed. I just watched Genesis this week, and my reaction was, "...and they say Threshold is bad..."

Tom Paris is my fave VOY character (they're all good, though); so I enjoy seeing him with a lot of screen time in Threshold. Well, while he's still recognizable.
