Thoughts on "Legacy"

Just a couple of thoughts we had when watching Legacy today. This was the first time I'd seen this in twenty-or-so years, and my girlfriends first view.

Troi was hopeless in this. What sort of empath cannot detect deception? She had little to do anyway so they could have had her out on one of those "season one conferences" she used to get shipped out to all the time.

(This was my girlfriends comment after witnessing "in-your-face-camel-toe" when Ishara is on the bridge with Data in her blue costume) Does Picard buzz the quarter-master and tell them there's a hot female on board, find the most tightly fitting garment you can find and make her wear it! Loving the eighties power-ballad hair btw!

Towards the end (before the scene with Riker and Data where they smash you over the head with the "moral of the tale), Data escorts Ishara to the transporter room and they have a chat. In the background O'Brien says rather curtly "Whenever you're ready Commander". We both started laughing at this. Was he eager to clock-off from his shift or something? It sounds a little out of place, seeing as though he's stood there all the time anyway.

But don't get me wrong, we really enjoyed this episode. :bolian:

I thought it was a good episode. I missed Yar and thought this did an effective job via the crew especially Data to showcase their desire to resurrect a bit of Tasha by looking at Ishara through those rose-colored glasses--so the episode really rides on this so if you cared then it worked and if you didn't it was boring.

I also enjoyed the hostage sub plot and it had some nice action.

I haven't seen this episode in years but I don't remember it being a poor episode. Although the "visiting relative" is not a favourite concept of mine in any tv show, I didn't mind Ishara; I thought she gave some nice backtory to Yar, and it was interesting to see their homeworld. I liked the scene where Riker tells Picard he doesn't want to make the same mistake again that got Yar killed, or something similar. I thought that was a nice character moment.

Given Ishara's purpose for being onboard, I'm pretty sure she ordered the garment herself from the replicator, making doubly sure it was two sizes too small.

Plus very impressive sets and props to create the proper mood. Lots of cool technology in use or at least name-dropped, too, making it feel as if this really is the future and not just Hill Street Blues in space or something. Excellent "production values" all around, including the casting.

I really enjoyed this episode. It reminds you how people are different from your expectations and they don't always do what you expect of them. Just because Ishara looked like Tasha and was her sister did not mean they were the same person, despite what the crew may have wanted. I also enjoyed the dark quality of this episode. It reminded me of early DS9 quite a bit.

Eighties time-warp: check
Sirtis mediocre acting: check

Saw this recently for first time and enjoyed, although the 'sibling not like their dead sibling' aspect rather obvious and laboured.
