Thoughts on Discovery Starfleet Uniforms (Trailer Edition)

Starfleet has changed color designations more than once, so no real reason not to add another color shift into the timeline.
Technically there isn't a huge color shift in designation either in DSC. Just a more solid uniform design, which honestly, the cut of it, reminds me of the dress uniforms in TOS.

conversely. the division colors in star trek 2009's opening scene aboard the kelvin made no real sense either and bore almost no relationship to the division colors as we knew them. it may have been that chris hemsworth looked better in blue or the producers believed it would sell that that scene took place in the 2230s instead of the 2250s like the rest of the film.

it's possible discovery's producers were thinking along those same lines. but i'm going with some executive was just being an executive.
I think I read that Michael Kaplan, costume designer, was working on a more retro-science fiction look for the Kelvin universe. I thought they flowed nicely from the ENT jumpsuits to those uniforms, with the blue still being for command, while the other two could be seen as transitioning to the colors that would be associated with different departments.

I think the strongest link is the blues to the ENT jumpsuits, while an argument could be made that the more service oriented branch were linked to the desert brown uniform.

It looked to me like:
Blue: Command
Mustard: Engineering
White: Medical

It was confirmed by an IGN member who did the set tour, that they did have cage style tunics but in TOS colours at one point early in production.

Too bad we will not see them soon, if at all.
Of course in trailers we see glimpses of Burnham wearing a yellow shirt and a blue shirt that look like a variant of Cage/TOS tunics. We also know that she is in command, but is in science at some point, so it's possible that they have under shirts for their divisions that resemble the uniforms we are used to.

I really hope that is the case. It would be a nice touch.

The uniforms are pretty Horrid. As much as I dont really care for the Kevin Universe...one thing that they got right is the uniforms. A nice BELIEVABLE update of the classic uniforms. These ugly uniforms on Discovery can't and don't fit into the uniform lineage. They could have had Blue and Mustard tunics with similar cuts but with different material like Kelvins homage to TOS uniforms. I will say it again....THE PRODUCERS DIDNT EVEN TRY....I think their egos got in the way.....:brickwall:

The flow just fine from the USS Kelvin uniforms to me
The Kelvin uniforms were a nice lineage design from Enterprise. Complete with Shoulder yoke...which came back during picards era....Discovery completely botched their uniform design. Should have been a similar design to the Cage. The pants and boot are awful also. Looks like something a skinny emo would wear...

To each their own. Not like Starfleet only needs one uniform. I think the DSC follow from Enterprise and Kelvin just fine.

Sounds interesting. So something like this?

This would have nicely bridged the gap between The Cage /WNMHGB and TOS. But, oh well.

Well this show is set like three years after the cage I believe...the uniforms in the cage were similar to TOS...the discovery uniforms do not follow a logical design evolution...

Yes, I often see emo kids wearing navy blue with metallic highlights and half a collar.

Barely any uniform fits a logical design evolution. TOS primary colours to pastel jumpsuits to heavy reds back to primary colours with a bit of black....

First of all, Starfleet uniforms have rarely followed a strict logical evolution.

Secondly, Starfleet really can have more than one uniform design at a time. It's ridiculous to have one uniform for working in. Certainly, we have seen that before with TMP, and TNG.

Finally, the uniforms still flow from the USS Kelvin uniform just fine.
