I like the concept of Kirk's arc, just wish it wasn't sped (like everything else Abrams speeds up). Like having Scotty leave because of his ethics over the use of torpedoes, only for Kirk to then change his mind anyway after going off to warp five minutes later (though I do like the Kirk/Spock exchange on the bridge after his intercom call).
The pacing is problematic and is a complete fair criticism. However, I can deal with it as far as the story and character development go.

Oh I dunno, if they'd have gone down that route you would have seen loads of people saying 'why not have khan appear', myself included. I think it's the execution of the story that's the problem, not the use of the character in the first place.

Wasn't there some meddling from above that made them turn the character into Khan after the story had already been developed?

Anyway, I think Faran Tahir would have been an excellent Khan... but he already appeared as Captain Robau in the previous movie!

Or Mark Strong. That's the guy in my mind who is the perfect cut for a Khan reboot

I didn't have a specific negative reaction to Cumberbatch's performance per say, just that it was him playing it. It was a miscast imho, & he did make the best of it

I see that and I don't at the same time. On the one hand, yes it makes sense to have Khan be discovered at some point.

On the other hand, I think that the idea of S31 augmenting humans, against Federation law, would have been an interesting idea to explore.

But, yeah, the execution of the story struggles because really it has two villains. Maybe if the secret box wasn't so important then it could have worked better.

John Harrison, augmented S31 agent, would have been better.

Especially if they used Khan's DNA to rewrite portions of his genetic code, but unfortunately the Khanness took over (like McCoy questioned Kirk about feeling power-hungry after he awoke). So you could have this guy who's becoming like Khan, and real Khan getting into a fight - real Khan only helps the Enterprise because he doesn't want competition/knows how the Khan-ized man is thinking, being Khan himself.

He was amazing as Khan. I want him back for a Sequel.
He wasn't trying to play Ricardo Montalbán. He was playing Khan. There are a few subtle homages to Montalban's Khan which I liked though. For me, it's his performance that makes me love the film. Far better than Villains of the week Krall and Nero. Trek needs strong villains.

Not sure about that, because I think that the augmentation process itself could produce the kind of power seeking all on its own. Especially if approached from the idea that these would be super soldiers, for the fight against the Klingons, only for Marcus' to decide to scrap the project in favor of his starship project, or something like that.

I would like him back for the sequel as well.

Personally, while I agree that Krall is week, I think Nero is one of the best villains Trek has produced for a film.

It was Damon Lindelof that pushed the idea of changing John Harrison into Khan after they had already written several drafts. That sort of explains some plot points like Kirk and Khan teaming up because Marcus was originally the only villain. Once they shoehorned Khan in, priorities changed.

We know now that Into Darkness came out in 2013, four years after Trek'09, instead of much sooner, because Bob Orci and Damon Lindelof were arguing over whether to use Khan or not.

Considering it was JJ Abrahms, I don't see why he couldn't have gotten Naveen Andrews. I think he could have been a good Khan. That, or just let Benedict play John Harrison but not Khan. He can't be Ricardo. Whitewashing.

They offered the role to Benicio Del Toro first but he wanted more money.

But yeah, lets call it whitewashing or whatever crap :ack:
I suppose you were against Ving Rhames playing Kojak too were you?

Or Michael Clarke Duncan playing the Kingpin.
