THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till release

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^Yeah, that's occurred to me too. He's a huge talent, but when he goes commercial - Frankenstein, Dead Again - he's not necessarily at his most interesting. I think that this is a brave and daring choice by Marvel (better him than Tim Story or Brett Ratner), but it could result in another Hulk, the Ang Lee version. Too cerebral to be a blockbuster, too comicky to be a critical success. Here's hoping he gets the mix right.

Fresh Thor casting news today after a stretch without any.

Jaime Alexander to play Sif.
Colm Feore's role is yet to be revealed but suspcted to be a villain.

Jaimie Alexander ("Kyle XY") and Colm Feore have joined the cast of Marvel
2.gif
Studios' comic book adaptation Thor, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Alexander and Feore join Chris Hemsworth, already cast as Thor; Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, the god of mischief who serves as the movie's villain; and Natalie Portman is Thor's human love, Jane Foster.
In Marvel's epic fantasy, Alexander is playing Sif, a skilled Asgardian warrior who can hold her own against any man. She also is one of Thor's loves.
Feore's character is shrouded in mystery, though it is known to be a villain.

Glad to know that the Disney/Marvel merger hasn't stalled this. The press releases said they wouldn't but I often times take those with a grain of salt till something like continued casting news such as today's surfaces.

Thoughts on this new bit of casting?

Colm Feore earned excellent villain cred in Storm of the Century. As for Jaimie Alexander, this is the first time I've heard of her.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^ Funny, I know him best as the essentially decent First Gentleman in the last season of 24, though I saw him as a bad guy in The Sum of All Fears. I could see him as a baddie, but I might have guessed he was playing Odin, but for the rumours that Brian Blessed was playing that role. Though has the Blessed casting been confirmed?

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Feore is too scrawny to be Odin; the father is meant to be a warrior god as much as the son is. Physiologically, he'd make a great 'older' Loki--perhaps a counterpart in Midgard.

Yeah, that guy just reeks creepiness.
Heh, different perspective. To Canadians he's best known for playing Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in a famous 2002 miniseries based on his life. Though he tends to be stuck playing villains in American productions.

If he's playing a named character, someone like Malekith would seem his type.

Alexander has the right look for Sif, though I'll be interested to see how she and Jane are handled vis a vis each other, since there's a significant starpower differential between her and Portman.

If they stick with a semblance of the script that has large parts in Asgard and then Earth perhaps they will not have to engage Thor/Blake in a love triangle scenario....right away.

Alexander as Sif gets screen time during the Asgard moments. Portman likewise when he is on Earth. I suspect they will tweak it so more time is on Earth. A prior draft had 2/3 of the movie in Asgard. They may not maximize Portman at all. She has played minor supporting roles before. She may have signed for 2 films and could be a big player in a sequel.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

From what we know, there is no Blake (according to Kevin Feige).

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Another new member to the cast has been announced.
Stellan Skarsgard, whos son Alexander was rumored to be up for Thor, has joined the cast in a role yet to be named.

Stellan Skarsgard ("Angels and Demons," "Mamma Mia!," "Pirates of the Caribbean") has revealed that he's joined the cast of Marvel Studios' "Thor" movie according to Ystads Allehanda
Skarsgard can not reveal what role he will play, though did say that he didn't sign on to the film until after he looked over the difficult to get script.
Skarsgard son, Alexander Skarsgard (TV's "True Blood"), was long rumored for the role of the titular Norse God until he was beaten by Aussie upcoming actor Chris Hemsworth ("Star Trek," "A Perfect Getaway").
Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and Samuel L. Jackson also star. Paramount will release the Kenneth Branagh-directed feature on May 20th 2011.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

If Skaarsgard senior is playing Odin, then the failure to cast his son as Thor must go down as the most wasted opportunity since they didn't get Donald Sutherland to play Philip Bauer in season 6 of 24!

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I thought Brian Blessed was Odin.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^ I heard that too, though at one stage the talk was of the Skaarsgard father and son playing Odin and Thor.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

A general casting call has gone out to fill generic roles as 'Warriors' in the Thor movie.
[WARRIORS] A fearless warrior race, where size, strength and ferocity define a member's rank in both the social and military hierarchy. Warriors born in this society face the harshest ecological conditions imaginable and thrive in environments where lesser creatures, including humans, quickly perishes. Theirs is a world created to cull weakness from the universe to ensure their supreme sovereignty spreads across the stars. MUST BE 6'2 OR TALLER sptv050769, NO BODYBUILDER TYPES. SAG ROLE BUT NO LINES. MUST BE COMFORTABLE WEARING PROSTHETICS.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

This seems unlikely but there are reports of Jude Law and Robert DeNiro joining the cast. As the original story hails from an interview with a German cast member in a German magazine, my bet is that the story actually says something about him following in their footsteps (Sleuth, Frankenstein) and that this has been wrongly translated. But we'll see and in the meantime, you decide yourselves.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Samuel L. Jackson is in everything!

Seriously, though, he signed up for something on order of nine Marvel films. Iron Man 2 we know for sure, Avengers seems a gimme, but that's still seven flicks left. I wouldn't be surprised to see him here, though I would be surprised if it was a very large role.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I really, really hope that Loki has a limited role in this movie. And that if Thor does well, he becomes a bit more of a player but in this one he is more the man behind the curtain.

Sure, Nick Fury is apparently the guy who puts the Avengers together. It's probably going to be another tacked on scene at the end of the movie, and will probably be silly, but there's a part of me that can't wait for the absurdity of it: Yeah, we know you're a god, we don't care - we're the United States Government, and we want you to work for us.
