Thor: Ragnarok

I thought both the Thor films were ok. I mean, I consider the second Thor film to be the weakest MCU film, but I still liked it well enough. Honestly, just not having the human character gives this movie a huge advantage. Having Thor do mostly fantastic stuff is a lot better then "grounding" him on Earth (even though we know he at least visits Earth in the new movie, he obviously does a lot of non Earth stuff, too).

Sounds good to me.
I'm surprised that Valkyrie is on Sakaar, I was assuming she'd come into the movie while Thor was on Asgard.
It sounds like Loki will be revealed pretty early in the movie, which is another surprise, I was expecting that to happen fairly late into it.

Neither of the Thor films was any good.

The first one has its moments (basically the first act, then it grinds to a screeching halt when Thor's banished to Earth and never really regains its momentum), but, yeah, the second is just a complete slog (why, oh why, do you cast an actor like Eccleston, and then put him under ten pounds of makeup and have 95 percent of his dialogue be gibberish) -- and the places where reshoots were done to put much more Loki in the film are painfully obvious. I think the only Marvel movie that's worse is Age of Ultron.

I'm glad Loki as Odin is acknowledged early on. That would be an unnecessary weight to hold down the film.

That's precisely why I dislike the second film so much (along with it being such a slog).

That;s an interesting article. All the stuff they mention sound cool. I'm still a bit disappointed that its more of a Planet Hulk story, but it seems like it could be very good.

I feel the same. The Thor movies are not the best of the MCU, and for me, the worst MCU film is either Thor 2 or Iron Man 2. And I still consider those highly entertaining movies, just flawed. But for me, the best stuff from Thor 2 was everything before he got banished to Earth. Sure, he had some hilarious moments when stripped of his powers, but the stuff in Asgard and on Jotenheim were great. So I can't wait for this movie to go deeper into the other Realms.

As more and more material from this film slowly ebbs out of the studio, the closer it appears to have more of a style and tone relationship in line with GOTG than the last two Thor films.

Which is pretty damned fine with me. Both of the previous Thor films have been serviceable, but outside of Brannagh's operatic stylings and Thor/Loki, nothing to give much of a hoot about.

Given the more fantastical nature elements of this film it also appears to be the connective tissue between the Earth and Galactic based arenas. A hard juggling act, but after his last few films, I have faith in Taika Waititi.

I just hope that it has enough of its own identity and a semblance of self-containedness that it can stand alone and not become another film that has to set up 2-3 others.

Hugo - genuinely likes Thor's new hair. Shorn, like Samson?

I know they seem to be playing it up right now, but I still question how much of the movie the stuff on Sakaar really takes up. I would be shocked if it took up more than 1/3 of the movie. It sounds to me like basically just a way to get The Hulk and Thor together so they can go off to search for Odin.

Agreed, I think the Planet Hulk stuff will just be limited to the first act and won't be a major part of the plot.

Wasn't Banner with Thor?
I guess part of the reason I'm thinking it'll be a smaller part of the movie is because it's so disconnected from everything else going on with Thor that I just can't see them spending a ton of time it.

Nope.

Given that Loki is on Earth with Thor as of this scene, and given that we know Loki winds up on Sakaar alongside Thor, it stands to reason that the search for Odin is what ultimately gets them propelled there.

What if it's somehow more connected than you think? With good writing, anything is possible. Actually, with bad writing, even more is.

You know, we've seen some still and the Dr Strange endcredit scene with a long haired Thor on Earth. So, either the team-up with him and Strange is early in the film, or this movie's timeline actually spands perhaps a year or so and Thor can grow his hair back.

The plot summary answers that question:

Thor goes to New York early in the movie. He encounters Hela who sends him to Sakaar. In Sakaar, his hair is cut.

I think the Planet Hulk stuff will be the bulk of the movie based on the same non-information everybody else has.
Sometimes a Sakaar is just a Sakaar.

Personally, this is more up my alley so I'm moderately excited. I found the first two movies to be really mediocre and not very interesting but the snippets I've read and some of the behind-the-scenes pics sounds fun. I can see where a Thor fan might not think so.

Where did you get the bit about him encountering Hela after he goes to New York? The EW article doesn't mention NY at all. I had been assuming it wouldn't be until later since we've already seen a homeless looking Odin in NY thanks to spy photos from the set. Since it sounds like finding Odin is one of Thor's main goals for the movie, it would expect it to be a while before we see him.
