Malekith was a part of Walter Simonson's big Surtur story-- he is the one who unleashed the Casket of Ancient Winters upon the Earth. AFAIK, he last appeared in the The Incredible Hercules arc that guest-starred Thor and the Warriors Three.

As a personal preference I do hope we get more Thor wearing his helmet this film.
It doesn't have to be the whole time, it can get knocked off but I'd like more of him with the helmet this time.

I don't really know the character (I've seen all of Season 1 of EMH, but I don't remember him, and I haven't read any Thor comics), but I like Eccleston, so this is good news to me.

Thats a great point! I heard it was uncomfortable for him to wear. You think they would just make a new version that improves that. But it is odd to expect strong toy sales that have little connection to what is in the actual movie. Its not like the usual masks issue were its hard for the actor to act behind.

Towards the end of the movie, when Heimdall broke out of his icicle and reopened the Bifrost, there was a quick shot of Fandral holding Darcy's hand (and, I think, kissing it) before he joins the others to head back to Asgard. So it's clear that she's already piqued his interest.
