Thomas Riker and his promotion

Capt_Pickirk

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I was watching 'Second Chances' yesterday and something occurred to me. Shouldn't Thomas Riker automatically be given a promotion to Lt. Cmdr.

Both he and Will Riker showed 'exceptional valor' during the mission on Nervala IV, which promoted Will Riker, but not Tom.

They should've promoted Thomas to captain of their newest flagship!

Cause nothing makes you fit for command and help out your people skills like 8 years in solitude.

He'd have had to DO something to get busted down a rank. Something bad enough to get punished, but not bad enough to get jailed or kicked out.

You can maybe get held from advancing for sympathies, but you don't get demoted for them...

Well, in lieu of anything canon, I think we can only speculate.
I'd like to think Tom Riker busted out of that camp, two chain gun disruptors in each hand, blasting everything in sight, stealing a shuttle and becoming king of the alpha quadrant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the rank question is simple: Starfleet was fresh out of Lt. Commander's pips when the Enterprise found him.

The bigger mystery is how is he as fat as Will Riker is?

 We was probably thinner on the planet, but after all those year pinning for Deanna and being yelled at by Will Riker, he probably started comfort eating.

I found the whole episode to be frivolous. The only thing i liked about it is that it provided some backstory on Riker and Troi's relationship before the enterprise and it kind of set up why Riker would be angry at Worf for dating Troi.

The most frivolous part of the whole thing is the TPTB completely blew a chance to promote William Riker to the captaincy he deserved, promote Data to first officer, Worf or Geordi to second officer and make Thomas start working his way back up the ladder at a bridge position. It would have solved the ridiculous situation of Will Riker turning down promotions but allowed Jonathon Frakes to stay on the show and maybe even stretch his acting abilities by playing his slightly psychotic twin.

It would've been an interesting spin, but ultimately too risque for Berman and company.

Until you realize they did the episode to lay the groundwork for just such a storyline, but Frakes didn't want to do it.
