Awesome design. Leaves little room for transwarp comedy though.

Which makes the design only better.
 
Hmm, just looking at the picture above again, I suddenly wondered if the hydraulics engineering scenes were inspired by it.
 
The Trekmovie article and Ryan Church Trek segment are not working for me at the moment :(

Looks like they were taken down for some reason.

I have to say, this art confirms several feelings.

First, that my dislike for the Enterprise bridge comes from how the set was (over)lit, not the actual design.

Second, that I really like the "glowing nacelles" warp effect that does rather comically evoke the beloved Playmates toys of my youth.

Third, that the Kelvin styling that we got in the movie was better than the overly-TOSy Iowa styling (although I still prefer the more TOSy styling of the concept Enterprise.)

Finally, that I still hate the brewery. :p
 
Aha. Is that from Ptrope's thread? I haven't been all the way through that one.

The room depicted in that image reminds me of a few real-world industrial or maritime/shipboard spaces I've been in at one time or another.

Agreed. There's nothing that says "preTOS" about the Iowa style. The Kelvin looks much more like an industrial predecessor to the Cadillac/sports car Enterprise.

I found it comical that it reminded me of the toy, not the actual property itself.

The reason it works for me is because I have basically rationalized that the new Enterprise is a somewhat more "evolved" version of the TOS ship, with more money/resources poured into its research yet still built with "older" technology. Therefore, it works for me that the engines might be powerful enough that it would render the housings translucent when they were active, and also, I feel, effectively conveys that sense of danger that MJ envisioned all those years ago when he placed them in nacelles. We also know that GR wanted some kind of glowey effect besides the front-caps, so I think it's safely rationalizable.

Plus, it's more fun than little neon glowy strips.

Yeah, very much agreed. I also get an Essex class to Nimitz class vibe there.
 
I may be in the thin minority on this topic,but I actually like the brewery style engineering ro versus the particle accelerator or clean room style engineering people here have advocated.

No matter how advanced a vehicle is,any reactor based space vehicle is gonna need a way to cool itself,which means you need pipes to get the coolant into and out of the reactor.

We also need a backup system,don't we?Add another set of pipes and valves ,and multiply by 5 going by number the reactors ejected on screen.

Now add the environmental and HVAC stuff,plus water recycling and waste management,cause even Vulcans gotta poop.

Oh ,but we also need containment vessels too ,cause the crew will not long tolerate 5 reactors worth of radiaton.

Get my drift ?Regardless of how futureistic a ship is,you will always need lines and pipes .On a ship with hundreds of crewmembers that is built to be self sufficient for years at a time,I can see an engineering bay being that busy with pipes .Should our grandkids get around to making a faster than light vehicle I imagine it's gonna be pipe and conduit city in whatever engineering bay it will have.
 
I imagine people could get very claustrophobic in Ptrope's engineering. Or perhaps that's just the entrance way, and engineering itself is 20 times bigger?

I have no problem with lots of complex pipes and machinery in the engine room, the problem was it all looked rather shoddy. Those big tanks - whatever they were - look like they're made of thin aluminum plating. NOT the kind of thing I'd want keeping the business end of a matter-antimatter reactor at bay.

The starship hulls and bulkheads made of wood must trouble you too.

Ya see, we were all right, again, that we would like the concept art better than than what we got.

but thats the usual story.

The concept is always better. I hate the brewery, i tried to like it but just didnt do it for me.

Least this looks as if someone has sat down with a pencil and worked from first line drawing to final CG render cos they, well, have sat down with pen and paper. I love it. The brewery was just a lazy ass way of conveying "industrial elements" into trek. :rolleyes:


The engine room is my only gripe with the movies set design, oh and the over lit bridge, but other than too many lights it was fine. The engine room was just shit, IMHO.
