^ yeah, that engine room is industrial while still having "way too advanced for you to figure out" written all over it.
Over in TrekArt, someone posted a TOS Engineering that had more "industrial" detailing to it that looked pretty good too.

Second, that I really like the "glowing nacelles" warp effect that does rather comically evoke the beloved Playmates toys of my youth.

"Comical" is the key word there. I hate them. It was an interesting exercise to see how that would look, but I hate that full-nacelle, flame-colored glow as much as I hate the moving parts in Gabe's Fuglyprise.

Agreed. There's nothing that says "preTOS" about the Iowa style. The Kelvin looks much more like an industrial predecessor to the Cadillac/sports car Enterprise.
I have no problem with lots of complex pipes and machinery in the engine room, the problem was it all looked rather shoddy. Those big tanks - whatever they were - look like they're made of thin aluminum plating. NOT the kind of thing I'd want keeping the business end of a matter-antimatter reactor at bay.I may be in the thin minority on this topic,but I actually like the brewery style engineering ro versus the particle accelerator or clean room style engineering people here have advocated.
No matter how advanced a vehicle is,any reactor based space vehicle is gonna need a way to cool itself,which means you need pipes to get the coolant into and out of the reactor.
We also need a backup system,don't we?Add another set of pipes and valves ,and multiply by 5 going by number the reactors ejected on screen.
Now add the environmental and HVAC stuff,plus water recycling and waste management,cause even Vulcans gotta poop.
Oh ,but we also need containment vessels too ,cause the crew will not long tolerate 5 reactors worth of radiaton.
Get my drift ?Regardless of how futureistic a ship is,you will always need lines and pipes .On a ship with hundreds of crewmembers that is built to be self sufficient for years at a time,I can see an engineering bay being that busy with pipes .Should our grandkids get around to making a faster than light vehicle I imagine it's gonna be pipe and conduit city in whatever engineering bay it will have.
