THIS was the design for the NEW engine room???

It's not bright enough, and the space feels too closed to me. Definitely prefer the bridge we got.

The bridge concept looks pretty close to what we got, just with better lighting - it doesn't look like one would open the doors of the lift and say, "Third floor - women's lingerie!" The HUD is, IMHO, a practical and plausible application - if one has to reimagine the tech of TOS for today, that's the least one should do; HUDs may have been largely unknown in 1966, but today they're commonplace, in sci-fi as well as in real life, and they're simply a good idea. Besides, we did get them in the film - we see Uhura behind one when Pike asks for confirmation of Kirk's identification of the trap laid by Narada.

My only complaint with the bridge in the painting is the needless extensions of the command deck at either end of the helm - all those 'prongs' are good for is barking one's shins when navigating the bridge, or worse injuries when bodies start flying during combat or maneuvers that strain the inertial dampeners. And the maitre d' stations are still questionable, as well.

It's amazing how lighting can make the same essential design look either appealing and exciting (the painting) or overwhelming and even a little silly (the film - IMO, of course).

That's pretty much the same bridge design as the final one, except for fewer point lights on the perimeter stations - and minus the hand-scanners, of course. ;)

Bear in mind that this is only one view point of engineering and is meant to be expanded upon. The stuff you see in the concept art may not even be the warp cores!

I like this section of the engine room. I think the brewery that we got was just a part that we saw and not all that there is. The next movie should be able to have a budget to make this happen.

The bridge that we got was very close but upscaled a bit. I think the concept art bridge would be too small for the big E.

This engine room is light-years better than the warp-brewery. And I can see it working if you crammed it up into the nacelles (justify those big ass thing) and have the nacelles blow off to dump into the blackhole.

The concept engineering section looks good.
Buuuut.....the brewery style did have one advantage:it captured the nitty gritty feel of a proper engineering space well, which sells better to the public than the concept art version pictured above. And the brewery had the real world advantage of being cheaper to use than paying a staff to build the concept art set from scratch,to scale.

IMO the brewery would have worked if it had been packaged to look like a starship versus a giant building.

I think the brewry worked just fine, considering they avoided any angles that would give a line of sight greater than a few dozen meters. If you simply interpret it as "engineering support" space, then we can get away with believing that we've never actually seen the engine room of the new Enterprise and, therefore, we won't loose any sleep when the next film (given probably a larger budget, more control of their schedule and a smaller number of sets to be built) provides a purpose-built studio engine room instead of dressing up a suitable location.

I definitely like this engine room and bridge better. The bridge lighting in the movie was way too bright, and the large tanks (reactor cores?) in engineering looked like they were slapped together out of sheet metal - not what I'd want standing between me and a matter/antimatter furnace, and I agree that it would work better as an engineering support area. I didn't HATE what we got in the film... its just that these are much, much better. I also prefer the somewhat smoother and more TOS-like Enterprise and Kelvin (Iowa) seen here.

The engine room concept is nice, but it looks far too small. It's about the same size of the engine room of a World War II submarine.

I dunno - I kinda like the idea that the secondary hull is so packed full of machinery that there isn't a while lot of human space available. Plus I think there's a lot we're not seeing.

It looks like it has more walls. I think the floor's a different colour, too, maybe?

That's the same thought I had. A futuristic Operation: Petticoat engine room; all it needs is a woman's undergarment to help make it run properly.

The IDIC insignia on the Jellyfish is very nice; I hadn't noticed that before.

The red-alert engine room is very pretty. This design brings to mind the cat walk in ENT.
